Beat-the-Heat…!

There is no denial of the fact that the temperature in the summer season is rising to unbearable levels day-by-day. This is one of the implications of the Global Warming phenomenon which is inevitable given to the rise in wants of humans for comfort and available resources to fulfil those.

Air conditioning cools air within a closed space by releasing the hot air in the outer atmosphere catalysing global warming which will keep rising the temperature; a vicious circle that cannot be broken without a conscious effort of compensating the harm any AC causes to the environment.

One way to do this is planting more and more trees, at least 50 trees for a one-ton AC. But that cannot be a practical solution as, who would govern it and how? Also, people who can shell out money for their comfort would readily pay additional cost to get away with any such ‘*condition’!

Seems to be a catch-22 situation, isn’t it? But creativity is a quality specific to humans that have helped them not only survive all the calamities but build the world that we see around and live in. So, if one cannot refuse or reduce, it must reuse, recycle, and repurpose the available resources.

Air-coolers are much cheaper than ACs and are less harmful to the environment. And given the period of max, say 4 afternoon hours for 2 months of scorching heat, getting a cooler on rent can make a huge difference and a system offering such a solution can be easily devised and deployed.

Any such arrangement of making coolers available on rent is going to have its challenges and implications. Firstly, it will require change in the mindset and, an ecosystem supporting it. But it could be manageable, inexpensive, and certainly less destructive being sustainable to an extent.

This is just an idea that needs deliberation to prolong the catastrophe that is imminent otherwise. But for those who are environment/cost-conscious but still want to claim their comfort and are ready to experiment, here’s an idea that can work for you if you have a table-fan and an icemaker.

Disclaimer: This is a DIY experiment [Jugaad] that needs care and caution, try it at your own risk!

By the way, do you know that ‘Jugaad’ has found a place on Wikipedia and also in the dictionary…?

Trivia: In old times, structures were built with natural elements like stone and wood. Use of cement, glass was zero/minimal which helped the natural air-conditioning. The proof of concept is any ancient Indian temple that is the shelter providing comfort naturally in all weather conditions.

निष्काम कर्माचे नव्हे, सुखदुःखे समे कृत्वा भाव मनी धरायचे,
लोकशाहीची बूज राखण्या जनार्दनाने कर्तव्य आपले करायचे.

संकर्षण कऱ्हाडे 

संयुक्त महाराष्ट्र चळवळीने नियतीशी मांडलेला डाव चौसष्ठ घरं फिरून आज चौसष्ठाव्या महाराष्ट्र दिनी कसा उलटलाय याचे आपण साक्षीदार असलो तरी, महाराष्ट्र धर्म वाढवण्याची जबाबदारी ही आपलीच होती, राहील आणि आज महाराष्ट्राच्या या निर्नायकी अवस्थेत तर ती अगदीच निर्णायक ठरेल. तेव्हा, परिस्थिती कितीही विदारक असली आणि आशा कितीही अंधुक असली तरी, ‘वो सुबह कभी तो आयेगी…’ यावर (अंध)विश्वास ठेऊन लोकशाहीच्या महोत्सवातला आपला सहभाग नोंदवायला मतदानकेंद्रावर हजेरी लावणे हा आपला अधिकार आणि कर्तव्य तर आहेच पण प्राप्त परिस्थितीत तो खराखुरा, निष्कलंक आणि निरपेक्ष धर्म आहे, तो पाळू या.

‘माझ्या एका मताने असा काय मोठासा फरक पडणार आहे?’ आणि, ‘एकतर राजकारण हा काही माझ्या आवडीचा विषय नाही, मला त्यात शून्य इंटरेस्ट आहे. शिवाय उन्हाने काहिली होत असतानां खास रांग लावून निवडून द्यावे असले कुठले थोर समाजसेवक रिंगणात आहेत…!’ असा सर्टिफाईड मध्यमवर्गीय विचार करून मतदानाची सुटी एन्जॉय करायला लोणावळा (सरड्याची धाव…) गाठणारे महानुभाव, रात्री पानाच्या ठेल्यावर मघई किंवा फुलचंद बरोबर ‘महागाई’ चघळतांना आढळले तर त्यांना पार्थसारथ्याच्या, ‘तेव्हा कोठे गेला होता राधासुता तुझा धर्म?’ या प्रश्नाचे उत्तर तयार ठेवायला लागेल; पानाबरोबर गिळून किंवा थुंकून टाकता येणार नाही!

तेंव्हा, विद्यार्थी चीटिंग करतात म्हणून पेपरच तपासायचे नाही असे ठरवले तर मात्र नक्की ‘निकाल’ लागेल… लोकशाहीचा!

या निर्णयाच्या अंमलबजावणीने धोरणाचा मूळ हेतू साध्य झाला तर उत्तमच पण त्या निमित्ताने विद्यार्थ्यांना, ‘माझी माय सरसोती माले शिकवते बोली…!’ म्हणणाऱ्या बहिणाबाईंना जाणता आले तरी मोठीच उपलब्धी म्हणायची. बहिणाबाई किंचित जरी आकळल्या तर पामरांना जगणे बऱ्यापैकी कळायची सोय…!

Premiered yesterday on YouTube, ‘Too Much Democracy’ is a must watch for every Indian who wants to understand, analyze, interpret and act on the facts with a conscientious and unbiased perspective and not get carried away with a propaganda presented by compromising the facts and taking too much cinematic liberty!

Varrun Sukhraj has made a commendable job to document this revolution that never become unconstitutional, been and remained true to its spirit and principle, never succumbed to any forces and disturbances including natural calamities and continued its ‘intervention’ to register success of another nonviolent movement in India and stands as an epitome of the belief that…

Freedom and Democracy is not just about choosing people or electing candidates; it is more about using strengths and rejecting anything that has malicious intentions backed by unprecedented power to force them through.

This Facts-based Documentary demystifying all the fake narratives has Constitution of India in its pulse and therefore this is a tribute to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar on his 133^rd Birth Anniversary.

Even before joining the Constituent Assembly, Dr. Ambedkar was developing ideas of constitutional theory and democracy. ‘सावली’ला हवंय छत…!

सावलीच्या विस्तारणाऱ्या क्षितिजाला योगदानासाठी नितेशचे आवाहन त्याच्याच शब्दात…  

प्रिय स्नेही, नमस्कार!

सावली ही अहमदनगर स्थित सेवाभावी प्रकल्प आहे. गेली तेवीस वर्ष आई वडील नसलेली, निराधार, आत्महत्याग्रस्त शेतकऱ्यांची, एक पालक असलेल्या मुलांची घरासारखी योग्य काळजी घेण्यात यावी यासाठी मनापासून दर्जेदार सेवांमार्फत प्रयत्नशील आहे. आज पर्यंत जवळजवळ १,५०० (एक हजार पाचशे ) निराधार मुलं, मुली सावली मधून उत्तम नागरिक होऊन बाहेर पडले आहेत.

आमच्या कामाचे कौतुक आत्ता पर्यंत कवी प्रवीण दवणे, गप्पाष्टककार संजय उपाध्ये, ज्येष्ठ विचारवंत साहेबराव अवारे, गांधीवादी डॉ . सुगण बरंठ, लेखक हेरंब कुलकर्णी, अनिकेत आमटे, स्वयं टॉक संस्थापक अनिल काळे, हेमा काळे, अलका मांडके, रश्मी भातखळकर, विश्वास नांगरे, कृष्ण प्रकाश, जिल्हाधिकारी राहुल द्विवेदी, आयुक्त पंकज जावळे, आल्हाद काशीकर, मनीष पुराणिक, विजय तांबे, अभिनेते चिन्मय मांडलेकर, प्रकाश धोत्रे, शास्त्रज्ञ जयंत नारळीकर, पत्रकार महेंद्र मुंजाळ, उद्योजक दीपक घैसास, प्रभाकर गाणू परिवार, राजेंद्र जोशी, मुंबई, अविनाश सावजी, छायाताई फिरोदिया, पोपटराव पवार, स्माईल फौंडॆशन, मुंबई तसेच अहमदनगर मधील पत्रकार मित्र, सामाजिक, राजकीय-सांस्कृतिक क्षेत्रातील पाच हजाराहून अधिक प्रतिष्ठीत  व्यक्तींनी केले आहे. जेंव्हा गरज पडेल तेंव्हा आर्थिक मदतही केली आहे.

अनेक आव्हानं झेलत आज सावली निराधार मुलांसाठी एक उत्तम सेवा करणारी संस्था असून एक मुलांचं हक्काचं, प्रेमाचं घर म्हणून नावारूपाला आली आहे. आव्हाने ही सतत येणारी प्रक्रिया आहे. सरकारी नियमांचे पालन करणे हे अजून एक आव्हान आहे. या नियमांनुसार सावलीला आत्ताची जागा खूप  कमी पडत आहे. सरकारी नियमानुसार सध्याची संख्या व  मुलांसाठी प्रयोगशील शिक्षण देण्यासाठी  सावलीला आता दुसऱ्या व मोठ्या जागेत जाणे अनिवार्य झाले आहे.

या साठीचा प्रामाणिक प्रयत्न म्हणून सावली आता मोठ्या जागेत निराधार, एक पालक, स्थलांतरीत कुटुंबातील मुलांसाठी योग्य व्यवस्था करत आहे. पण लोक सहभागाशिवाय हे अशक्य आहे. हा सहभाग मुख्यत्वे  या क्षणी देणगी या स्वरूपातील आहे. पुढच्या टप्प्यात बांधकाम स्वरूपाचा आहे.

गेली तेवीस वर्ष लोकांनी दाखवलेला विश्वास आज पर्यंत शेकडो मुलांना आनंदी, समृद्ध आयुष्य देऊ शकला याचा आनंद आहे. आपल्याच आर्थिक सहयोगाने पुढील काळात हजारो गरीब निराधार मुलांना उत्तम दर्जाचे शिक्षण, दर्जेदार सुविधा मिळणार आहे याचा विश्वास आम्ही आपणास देत आहोत. आम्ही सावलीचे मुख्य विश्वस्त म्हणून सावलीला देणगीच्या रूपात मदत करावी हे आव्हान करत आहे. हे करण्याआधी सध्या सावलीच्या जागेस भेट देऊन, आत्ता पर्यंतचा प्रवास लक्षात घेऊन मग योग्य निर्णय वाचकांनी घ्यावा ही नम्र विनंती. 🙏

लपतात पण लाजत नाहीत
चावतात पण दिसत नाहीत
चिरडावे तर सापडत नाहीत…
ढेकूण फार झालेत…

चिरडलेच तर वाढतात
आपलेच रक्त काढतात
सगळे कपडे फाडतात
ढेकूण फार झालेत…

पेस्ट कंट्रोलवाले येतात 
उपाय सारे करून जातात 
निलाजरे विषही पचवितात
ढेकूण फार झालेत…

परोपजीवी इकडून तिकडे वाहतात
आपला आकडा वाढवत राहतात
बारमाही पर्वणीत पवित्र नाहतात

घरालाच चूड लावावी का?
आपलेच संचित जाळावे का?

आमच्या आजीची काही आवडती बोलगाणी होती. कुणी लिहिली होती माहित नाही. आम्ही नातवंडांनी तिच्याच तोंडून ऐकली आणि आमच्या लक्षात राहिली तशी इतरांना ऐकवली. त्यात एक गाणे ती मोठ्या तन्मयतेने गात असे… ‘बाबा, ढेकणाने मजला पिसाळले…!’

आज, इतक्या वर्षांनंतरही ढेकणांच्या त्रासातून आपली पूर्णतः सुटका झालेली नाही याचे वैषम्य आणि आजीला होणारा त्रास जाणवल्याने हे लिहावेसे वाटले. याचा नुकत्याच जाहीर झालेल्या निवडणुकींशी दुरान्वयानेही संबंध नाही आणि तो तसा भासला तर निव्वळ योगायोग समजावा…!

प्रज्ञा…!

जनक राजाच्या शास्त्रार्थ सभेत देशभरातल्या वेदशास्त्रसंपन्न प्रकांड पंडितांना एकापाठोपाठ एक नामोहरम करित, शेवटी उरलेल्या याज्ञवल्क्य ऋषींना, जीवन-मृत्यूच्या पलीकडे ब्रह्मलोकाच्या पार जाऊन प्रश्न विचारणाऱ्या विदुषीवर याज्ञवल्क्य संतापले. जनक राजाने मध्यस्थी करून याज्ञवल्क्यांना आपल्या चुकीची जाणीव करून दिल्यावर याज्ञवल्क्यांनी विदुषीची माफी मागितली आणि आपले गुरुत्व स्वीकारण्याची विंनती केली. तथापि याज्ञवल्क्यांसारख्या महर्षींना आपले शिष्य नव्हे तर सहचर बनविण्याच्या विचाराने विदुषीने त्यांना विवाहाचा प्रस्ताव दिला. 

मित्र ऋषींची कन्या तीच ही मैत्रेयी ! जेंव्हा याज्ञवल्क्य ऋषींनी परम ज्ञानाच्या प्राप्तीकरिता साधना करण्यासाठी सर्वसंग परित्याग करून संन्यास घेण्याचे ठरविले तेंव्हा त्यांच्या संपत्तीतील आपला वाटा त्यांची प्रथम पत्नी कात्यायनी हिला देऊन ज्ञानसाधनेसाठी त्यांच्याबरोबर संन्यास घेणे जिने निवडले तीच ही मैत्रेयी!

   बृहदारण्यक उपनिषदामध्ये याज्ञवल्क्य आणि मैत्रेयीच्या शास्त्रार्थ संवादाचे विस्तृत वर्णन येते. त्यात  “आत्मस्व” किंवा आत्मा या विषयावरचा संवाद संपवून, याज्ञवल्कय मैत्रेयीला सांगतात:

हे मैत्रेयी, माणसाने खरोखर पाहावे, ऐकले पाहिजे, समजून घेतले पाहिजे आणि आत्म्याचे मनन केले पाहिजे; ज्याने स्वतःला पाहिले, ऐकले, चिंतन केले आणि समजून घेतले – त्याच्याद्वारेच सर्व जग ओळखले जाते.

—  बृहदारण्यक उपनिषद २.४.५ब 

ख्यातनाम हिंदी साहित्यकार बुद्धिनाथ मिश्र म्हणतात, “आपल्या संस्कृतीत स्त्रीला पुरुषाच्या अर्धांगिनी बरोबर सहधर्मीणी – धर्माच्या मार्गावर जोडीने चालणारी देखील मानले आहे. पश्चिमेच्या इतिहासकारांनी भारतीय महिलांबद्दल लिहिले की त्यांना शिक्षणाचा अधिकार नव्हता. मैत्रेयीचे जीवन त्यांची ही मांडणी खोटी ठरविते. ऋग्वेदाच्या १० पेक्षा जास्त ऋचा लिहिणारी आणि भारतीय दर्शनशास्त्राच्या अद्वैतासह शेकडो सिद्धांतांना प्रस्थापित करणारी मैत्रेयी सार्वकालिक भारतीय महिलांच्या प्रज्ञेचे प्रारूप आहे!”

आत्मविमोह…!

• समोरच्या व्यक्तीच्या चेहऱ्याकडे न बघणे, नजरेला नजर न देणे.
• दुसऱ्याकडे बघून स्मितहास्य न करणे.
• भाषेचा विकास अतिशय विलंबाने वा अजिबात न होणे.
• समोरच्याने बोललेलेच पुन्हा बोलणे.
• स्वतःतच मग्न असणे.
• अन्य व्यक्तींचे विचार, माहिती, भावना वेगळ्या असू शकतात हे माहीत नसणे.
• मैत्री करता / टिकवता न येणे.
• एकट्यानेच तोच- तोच खेळ खेळत राहणे.
• परिस्थितीत बदल झाल्यास अस्वस्थ होणे.
• एखादी गोष्ट पसंत नसल्यास रडून गोंधळ घालणे.
• एकाच गोष्टीत नको इतका रस दाखविणे. 
• सामान्य ज्ञान कमालीचे तोकडे असणे.
• अतिक्रियाशील वा अतिमंद असणे.

कृपया गैरसमज नसावा. एका अभ्यास अहवालाच्या कामासंदर्भांत सापडलेली ‘ऑटिजम’ अर्थात स्वमग्नता, आत्मविमोह या मानसिक स्थितीच्या काही लक्षणांची ही सूची. सांप्रत काळी आजूबाजूला आढळणाऱ्या बहुतांश मनुष्यप्राण्यांत ही लक्षणे आढळल्यास तो निव्वळ योगायोग समजावा, त्याला कुठलाही वेगळा संदर्भ जोडू नये अथवा स्मार्टफोन, (स)माजमाध्यमे, सामाजिक/ राजकीय परिस्थिती यांच्याशी त्याचा संबंध शोधू नये ही कळकळीची विनंती!

In a different context and responding to another situation involving AI, following is my take on AI…

• I think being on the receiving side of the AI tool, we should be more equipped for Prompt Engineering and need to develop our skills for asking the right questions with a right context and in a right tone as the machines have become smart enough to understand the tone also.
• It is easy for AI to process the query with all the Artificial Intelligence put into it, but we need to retain (and develop) our natural intelligence for striking the right chords and pushing the right buttons if we want to make the most of it.
• Finally, a blade can be used to cut but whether to put it in a knife or a scalpel is completely up to the conscience (which is still a human monopoly) and not just intelligence. So, it is alright not to be conscious or scared of AI but at the same time, we must be cautious and concerned about its implications as well.

I am not against technological development or anything, only thing is I wholeheartedly believe that it is never about the tool but the mind and intention behind it that matters. Spears and javelins were originally invented for hunting the prey but soon became the weapons of war between the human troops. If Homo Sapiens were smart enough to use the weapon for their personal aspirations, it is scary even to imagine what a techno-savvy developed brain could make it to serve its monstrous ambitions!

It is more important to raise the collective EQ of the society before exposing it to the unprecedented powers. Humans could continue to exist only when any kind of power is balanced with equal amount of empathy!

FLN…?

The review and reports on Education System and Schooling, particularly in the Rural Areas of India, concludes that Schooling is not equal to Learning with majority of the students lacking Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) that refers to children’s ability to read with meaning and solve basic math problems by the end of Class 3. These, as the terminology suggests, are critical gateway skills that form the foundation for children on which they build their lives.

This is the picture of the Schools having reasonable infrastructure, prescribed number of teachers to some extent and having enough school time to complete the curriculum for a specific standard and move ahead in the next year. Also being in the area that is accessible, visible and reviewable, such schools are bound to follow bare minimum code-of-conduct benefiting its students, to the least if not the most.

All said and done, the situation of all Urban, Rural Schools at all levels is ought to improve, no doubt and the appropriate measures to enhance the ‘learning’ of the children to make them rational and responsible citizens of the country is imperative, indeed. This still could said to be a comparatively ‘good’ picture in Urban areas, may be ‘not so good’ or ‘bad’ in the rural areas, but do you have any idea of the ‘ugly’ picture of this when it comes to the discontinued, inferior schooling, let alone the learning, of the sugarcane migrant worker’s children?

UNICEF report focused on Maharashtra’s migration-affected children has a recommendation for such children’s education that states, ‘The state can collaborate with CSOs and employers to set up systems for on-site schools in areas where migrants live on worksites, especially in peri-urban or rural locations far from regular schools.’

Jidnyasa Charitable Trust is one such organization that is helping these migrant children continue their education and provide them the basic necessities they are deprived of. Daan Utsav is the Campaign with a goal of raising INR 30 Lakh to support this cause. Timing to support this campaign couldn’t be better as this is the time of the year when the migrant workers are taken to the Sugarcane fields and made to stay there for almost half the year.

स्वतंत्र भारताने एक लोक सेवक संघ स्थापून कांग्रेसचे त्यात विलीनीकरण करावे या आपल्या संकल्पनेला मूर्त स्वरूप देण्यासाठी गांधीजींनी, त्यांची हत्या झाली त्याच्या एक दिवस आधी, २९ जानेवारी १९४८ रोजी, काही मार्गदर्शक तत्वे लिहून ठेवली आहेत.

२. लोक सेवक त्याच्या कार्यक्षेत्रातील प्रत्येक गावकऱ्याच्या वैयक्तिक संपर्कात राहणे आवश्यक असेल.
३. लोक सेवक गावकऱ्यांमधील कामगारांची नावनोंदणी करेल, त्यांना यथायोग्य प्रशिक्षण देईल आणि या सर्वांची नोंद ठेवेल.
४. लोक सेवक आपल्या दैनंदिन कामाची नोंद ठेवेल.
५. लोक सेवक आपल्या खेड्यांना त्यांच्या शेती आणि हस्तकलेद्वारे स्वयंपूर्ण आणि स्वावलंबी बनवण्यासाठी संघटित करेल.

The Maharashtra state cabinet approved the proposal to have corporate houses, as well as individual donors and social organizations to adopt government-run schools for a period of five or ten years. The initiative, announced by School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar, is aimed at using Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds of business establishments to improve school infrastructure and facilities. The companies are be incentivized by letting them attach their name to the school’s existing name. The government also hopes that healthy competition among corporates and their adopted schools will prove to be beneficial to the state’s public education sector.

The Snehalaya English Medium School in Ahmednagar has been credited with rewriting the narrative for marginalized communities in semi-rural India. With 25 per cent of the school’s students being HIV and an even higher number being children of sex workers, the school’s students face systemic discrimination. The school overcame initial challenges in recruiting students who did not come from these disadvantaged backgrounds by connecting with village leaders who hosted meetings with parents to openly discuss and allay their concerns.

In 2035 it would be 200 years to ‘Minute on Indian Education’ by Macaulay that changed the course of history. The rulers have tried to ‘educate’ us for years and we are yet to learn the lesson, it seems! Culture and Intent is what matters, infrastructure and Content are always secondary when it comes to education which is meant to build capacities of generations. While trying to secure CSR support, organizations must be mindful of the fact that they are there to do what governments can’t and markets won’t do. Finding the synergy is one thing, being obliged is completely different!

Gajanan Madhav Joshi (Presently residing at Australia) for his gesture of love, gratitude and reverence for our most beloved and adored teacher Shri Dabke Sir, who will always remain the epitome of developing Scientific temper in children; being honest to that very scientific temper “that is ever ready to welcome new light, new knowledge, new experiments, even when their results are unfavorable to preconceived opinions and long-cherished theories”, please allow me to clarify a message being viral about a star being named after Dabke Sir by NASA which is not only half-truth but also completely misguiding as spreading such type of messages without verifying the facts amounts to propaganda for deceptive purposes.

We, as the citizen of the largest democracy and students of New City High School, Dhule and Dabke Sir, should refrain from any such act and please do not spread any such news that will not only demean but will also discredit our upbringing as it will defeat the very purpose of evolution, education and development.

No matter what, Dabke Sir was, is and will always be Extra-Bright Shining Star for all his students, with or without any glorification whatsoever. We love and respect you, SIR!

Freedom…!

Freedom is one of the most important factors in life. Man has fought politically for freedom all over the world. religions have promised freedom, not in this world but in another. In the capitalist countries, individual freedom exists to some degree, and in the communist world it has been denied. From ancient times freedom has meant a great deal to man, and there have been its opponents, not only political but religious- through the Inquisition, by excommunication, tortures and banishments, and the total denial of man’s search for freedom. There have been wars and counter-wars fought for freedom. This has been the pattern of man’s endeavours for freedom throughout history.

Freedom of self-expression and freedom of speech and thought exists in some parts of the world, but in others it does not. Those who have been conditioned revolt against their backgrounds, and react in immature ways. This reaction, which takes different forms, is called “freedom”. The reaction to politics is often to shun the field of politics. One economic reaction is to form small communities based on some ideology or under the leadership of some one person, in which authority is denied and an attempt is made to be self-supporting, but these generally disintegrate. The religious reaction against established organizations of belief is to revolt, either by joining other religious organizations or by following some guru or leader or by joining some cult. Or one denies the whole religious endeavour. Don’t all these indicate mere outward movements toward freedom?

One thinks of freedom only as freedom of movement, either physical or the movements of thought. It appears one always seeks freedom on the surface, the right to go from here to there, to think what one likes, to do what one likes, to choose, and to seek wider experiences. Surely this is a rather limited freedom, involving a great deal of conflict, wars and violence. Inner freedom is something entirely different. When there is deep, fundamental freedom, which has its roots not in the idea of freedom but in the reality of freedom, then that freedom covers all movement, all the endeavours of man. Without this freedom, life will always be an activity within the limited circle of time and conflict.

So when we talk of freedom we are talking of the fundamental issue. It is not a freedom from something, but the quality of a mind and heart that are free, and in which direction does not exist. Freedom from something is only a modified continuity of what has been, and therefore it is not freedom. When there is direction, and therefore choice, freedom cannot exist; for direction is division and hence choice and conflict.

There is no such thing as individual freedom, but only freedom. The word individual in its very meaning implies indivisible, not an entity opposed to the collective. But we have made a concept of individuality with its peculiar characteristics, tendencies and so on which are the response of conditioning, and we oppose it to the collective. This conditioning is part of the culture-economic, social and so on-in which the mind is educated. Freedom lies beyond this conditioning, not within the field of consciousness with the content that makes up consciousness. The responsibility that lies beyond conditioning is different from the responsibility of so-called freedom.

The responsibility of a conditioned mind is irresponsibility, which can be perceived in the present cultures of society, whether of the East or of the West. This irresponsibility is shown in education, in social injustice, in national divisions with different ideologies leading to competition, wars, starvation, affluence and poverty. The irresponsibility of organized religions is shown in their support and maintenance of these cultures. These religions preach morality, but sustain corruption. They are at war with each other, asserting that they alone have the truth, that their gods and saviours are the real. This irresponsibility is shown when an intermediary is placed between the real and the human. This irresponsibility is shown when temples, mosques and churches become a power in the land.

Responsibility has quite a different meaning when there is freedom. responsibility does not deny freedom, they go together. When there is the deep fundamental reality of freedom, responsibility is concerned with the whole of life and not with one fragment of life; it is concerned with the whole movement and not with some particular movement; it is concerned with the whole activity of the mind and the heart and not with one particular activity or direction. Freedom is the total harmony in which responsibility is as natural as the flower in the field. That response is not induced or imposed; it is the natural outcome of freedom. Without responsibility, there is no freedom. To respond to every challenge out of freedom is responsibility. It is the inadequate response that is irresponsibility. The mind that is dependent in attachment becomes irresponsible to the whole.

So freedom is love, which in its very nature is responsible to the flower by the roadside, and to the neighbour whether the neighbour is next door or a thousand miles away.

Compassion is the very essence of freedom.

Putting it together…

Although writing a full-fledged CSR [or any other] Funding Proposal is an exhaustive and lengthy task that will need meticulous planning, organized effort, and plenty of time; there are few pointers that can help put together a concept note to initiate the fund requirement discussion.

Context setting goes a long way in making the reader interested in your story and therefore a brief intro of your endeavor is essential. This should include, who are you, what you intend to do, why you intend to do it and what is your action plan in form of objectives, strategy, and processes.

Secondly, it is equally important to establish the need of your intervention / project supported by validated data – preferably figures and statistics – to strengthen you case. It is great to share primary data but in case of secondary data, providing the source of information makes your case authentic.

Third subsequent part should describe the beneficiaries with their demographics including numbers, categories, classification, etc. to offer clear understanding of the reader about the receiving side stakeholders of the project as far as the contribution to sustainable development is concerned.

The beneficiaries’ part should have a link to the Global SDGs and the Schedule VII activities of the India’s CSR Act under Sec 135 of the Companies Act, 2013. This helps the reader to find the strategic connect of the intervention with the prescribed Global as well as Local Development Goals.

Next extremely important part of the document is Budget. No matter how innovative or game changing any idea can be, as the conventional wisdom has it – the proof is in the pudding! It takes resources to realize the vision and an overview, at least, of the project outlay makes the abstract more concrete.

Last but not the least, the Proof of Concept in form of Case studies, Testimonials and Impact stories that would advocate the capability and competency of the proposer to plan, execute, govern, and sustain the initiative even after the initial handholding, financial support, helps to get the buy-in.

These are the fundamental components of the initial pitching and any supporting documents like baseline survey, process diagram, implementation plan could be a great booster if provided along with the pitching or can be prepared and kept ready for the next phase of – Project Proposal. To sum it up, there are 5 basic questions to be answered to put together a concept note:

1. Who are you? – brief about the organization.
2. Why the intervention is necessary? – need assessment.
3. Who would be benefited by this intervention? – beneficiary profile.
4. What is required? – the budget.
5. Why you should be preferred? – capability, competency, and sustainability.

एथेन्स के राजमार्ग पर दो कवियों की भेंट हो गई। मिलकर दोनों को खुशी हुई।
एक कवि ने दूसरे से पूछा, ‘‘इधर नया क्या लिखा है?’’
दूसरे कवि ने गर्व से कहा, ‘‘मैंने अभी हाल ही में एक कविता लिखी है जो मेरी सभी रचनाओं में श्रेष्ठ है। मुझे लगता है यह ग्रीक में लिखी गई सभी कविताओं से भी श्रेष्ठ है। यह कविता मेरे गुरु की स्तुति में लिखी गई है।’’
तब उसने अपने कुरते से पाण्डुलिपि निकालते हुए कहा, ‘‘अरे देखो, यह तो मेरे पास ही है। इसे सुनकर मुझे प्रसन्नता होगी। चलो, उस पेड़ की छाया में बैठते हैं।’’ कवि ने अपनी रचना पढ़ी, जो काफी लम्बी थी।
दूसरे कवि ने नम्रतापूर्वक प्रतिक्रिया दी, ‘‘वह महान रचना है, कालजयी रचना है। इससे आपको बहुत प्रसिद्ध मिलेगी।’’
पहले कवि ने सपाट स्वर में पूछा, ‘‘तुम आजकल क्या लिख रहे हो?’’
दूसरे ने उत्तर दिया, ‘‘बहुत थोड़ा लिखा है मैंने। केवल आठ लाइनें–एक बाग में खेल रहे बच्चे की स्मृति में।’’ उसने अपनी रचना सुनाई।
पहले कवि ने कहा, ‘‘ठीक ही है, ज्यादा बुरी तो नहीं है।’’
आज दो हज़ार वर्ष बीत जाने पर भी उस कवि की आठ पंक्तियाँ प्रत्येक भाषा में बड़े प्रेम से पढ़ी जाती हैं।
दूसरे कवि की रचना शताब्दियों से पुस्तकालयों और विद्वानों की अलमारियों में सुरक्षित अवश्य रही है पर उसे कोई नहीं पढ़ता।

बारसू आणि रिफायनरी हे दोन शब्द तूर्तास महाराष्ट्राच्या राजकारणात फार कळीचे ठरत आहेत आणि यांच्या तापल्या तव्यावर  सगळेच लाभार्थी राजकारणी आपली पोळी भाजण्याचा प्रयत्न करतांना दिसत आहेत. सर्वसामान्य माणसाला ‘रिफायनरी म्हणजे काय रे भाऊ…?’ असा प्रश्न पडलाय तर मार्केट वाऱ्याची दिशा (आणि ठिकाण!) ठरण्याची वाट पाहते आहे.

या सर्व गोंधळात सामान्यांस वास्तवाचे किमान भान यावे, दडपलेल्या गोष्टींची निदान जाण असावी आणि जाहिरातींच्या गोंडस भुलाव्यांमागच्या भेसूर चेहऱ्याची झलक तरी दिसावी या उद्देशाने, सुविद्य आणि विवेकी पर्यावरणतज्ञ श्री. माधव गाडगीळ सरांनी आज लोकसत्तासाठी लिहिलेला ‘बारसूचे वास्तव काय आहे?’ हा अत्यंत अभ्यासपूर्ण आणि चिंतनीय लेख जरूर वाचावा.

जिज्ञासूंनी, गाडगीळ सरांनी उल्लेखलेला केंद्रीय प्रदूषण नियंत्रण मंडळाचा रत्नागिरी जिल्ह्यासाठी उद्योगांची सुयोग्य स्थलनिश्चिती दर्शविणारा नकाशा अवश्य पहावा. गाडगीळ सरांनी लेखाच्या समारोपात, विकिपीडिया या अत्यंत लोकाभिमुख व पारदर्शी माध्यमातून या संदर्भात लोकशाही पद्धतीने एक जन चळवळ कशी सुरु करता येईल याचा वस्तुपाठ देऊन स्वतःस जबाबदार, सूज्ञ तथा सजग मानणाऱ्या नागरिकांस यात सहभागी होण्याचे आवाहन केले आहे, त्यांस प्रतिसाद दिल्यास याला जन आंदोलनाचे स्वरूप येऊ शकते. 

गाडगीळ सरांच्या विवेचनाच्या पुष्टयर्थ, विनय जोशी यांची ‘पोकलेन विकासाद्वारे कोकणाचा वाळवंट आम्हीच करणार त्यासाठी रिफायनरीची गरज नाही!’ ही फेसबुक पोस्ट जरूर वाचावी.

आणि हो, ‘बारसू’ कुठेतरी लांब कोकणांत आहे त्याच्याशी माझा काय संबंध, सेकण्ड होमचा प्लॅन ठरेल तेव्हां पाहू,..’ असा विचार करणाऱ्यांसाठी,

त्यांनी जाळलं ते माझं गाव नव्हतं आणि
पुसून टाकलं ते माझं नाव नव्हतं 
म्हणून मी गप्प राहिलो तेव्हां 
आता ते माझ्यासाठी आले पण 
माझ्या मागे उभं रहायला 
नावही शिल्लक नव्हतं 
आणि गावही…!

विनासायास सुखासीन झालेल्या लाभार्थ्यांनी
पापाचे वाटेकरी होण्यास साफ नकार दिल्यावर

वाल्याचा वाल्मिकी करणाऱ्या सहज योजनेची

संक्रमण…!

समूहाचा समाज होऊन माणूस सौहार्द्र आणि संस्कृती जोपासू लागला तेव्हापासून काही चालीरितींचा परिपाठ सुरु झाला असावा. निसर्गनियमांना अनुसरुन विशिष्ट ऋतूच्या हवामानानुसार काही सण-समारंभ-उत्सव यांचे प्रयोजन केले जात असावे. माणसाला प्राथमिक गरजांपलीकडचा व्यवहार आणि भावना यांची ओळख झाल्यांनतर, परस्परावलंबनाची गरज आणि पर्यायाने परस्परसंबंधाची उपयुक्तता जाणवल्याने ज्या मानवी संबंध विषयक परंपरा प्रचलित झाल्या असाव्या त्यातूनच ‘थँक्स गिव्हिंग’, ‘पर्युषण पर्व’, ‘मकर संक्रांती’ अशी औचित्ये तयार झाली असावी. थंडीचा सामना करण्यासाठी शरीरात उष्णता निर्माण करणारे तिळगूळ या शास्त्रीय कारणाला, मकर संक्रमणाने नव्या पर्वाची सुरवात होण्याच्या मुहूर्तावर राग-लोभ, भेद-द्वेष विसरून, ‘जुने जाऊ द्या मरणालागुनी…’ म्हणत नवी सुरवात करायची म्हणून, गोड बोलण्याचा प्रेमळ आग्रहाची भावनिक वेलबुट्टी अशी मूळ कल्पना असावी. 

आज मात्र या सदिच्छेचा क्रम बदलून ‘गोड गोड बोला आणि तिळगूळ मिळवा’ असा उलटा झालेला दिसतो. सगळीकडे गोड बोलण्याची इतकी स्पर्धा आहे की साखरेला भाव का नाही याचे कोडे पडावे. बारा महिने साखरपेरणी अशी होतांना दिसते की मुंगी होऊन साखर खाण्याच्या अहमहिकेत मुंग्या खरंच मेरू पर्वत गिळतील की काय अशी शंका यावी. पूर्वी सरंजामशाहीत एक राजा, अष्टप्रधान मंडळ, काही खुषमस्करे आणि खूपशी खुशहाल(?) प्रजा अशी सर्वसाधारण रचना असे. आज आधुनिक लोकशाहीत एक राजा, त्याचे काही इमानी सेवक, बहुसंख्य खुषमस्करे आणि नेमक्या कुठल्या ‘मंडली’त सामील व्हावे म्हणजे नॉमिनेशन, पर्यायाने एलिमिनेशन पासून वाचता येईल आणि मिळेल त्या ‘प्राईज मनी’सह ट्रॉफी पटकवता येईल या विचारात ‘बिग बॉस’च्या सेवेत अहोरात्र झटणारी प्रजा असे चित्र दिसते.

हे चांगले आहे कि वाईट आहे याबद्दल मते मतांतरे असू शकतात. कुणाला ही ‘काळाची गरज’ वाटू शकते, कुणाला हे कुटुंबासाठीचे ‘सामाजिक कर्तव्य’ वाटू शकते, कुणाला ही अस्मितेसाठीची ‘राष्ट्रीय जबाबदारी’ वाटू शकते तर कुणाला हा संविधानप्रणीत ‘जन्मसिद्ध अधिकार’ वाटण्याचीही शक्यता नाकारता येत नाही. ते काहीही असले तरी विषाद वाटतो तो एकाच गोष्टीचा – म्हातारी मेल्याचं दु:ख नाही पण काळ सोकावतो. शिवाय, रक्तातली साखर प्रमाणाबाहेर वाढली तर त्याचा शरीराच्या इतर संस्थांवर परीणाम होऊन डोळे, धमन्या, किडनी, रक्तवाहिन्या असे अत्यंत महत्वाचे अवयव निकामी होण्याचा धोका असतो हे शास्त्रीय सत्य ‘डायबेटीस’ या बागुलबुवाच्या रूपाने भेडसावत असतेच.

तेंव्हा काही कालबाह्य झालेल्या पारंपारिक रीती-रिवाजांचा पुनर्विचार करून, नवयुगाच्या नवीन संदर्भात त्यांची फेररचना करावी असे वाटते. त्यामुळे ‘…गोड गोड बोला…’ ऐवजी, ‘खरं खरं आणि स्पष्ट बोला…’ असे पोटतिडकीने म्हणावेसे वाटते. आणि हा स्पष्टवक्तेपणा फारच अंगाशी येईल अशी भीती असेल तर पळवाट म्हणून, अलीकडे सगळेच जसे ‘कॉमेडी विथ कपिल’ आणि ‘महाराष्ट्राची हास्यजत्रा’च्या नावाने हसून साजरे करायचे असते, तसा एक प्रसंगोत्पात पुणेरी ज्योक आहेच दिमतीला… 

चायनीज खाऊन कुठं लोक चायनिज बोलतात का ?
मग…? तिळगुळ खाऊन गोड कसे बोलणार…?
– एक पुणेरी शंका     

बरं, गोड बोलण्याचं राहू  दे, पण मकर संक्रमणाने सुरु झालेल्या तेजोपर्वाच्या ‘मना’पासून शुभेच्छा… !

Vijay Prashard People’s Summit Speech

India is to host the G20 Summit for the first time in September 2023 and as a part of the leaders’ conference, around 200 meetings will be held across the country out of which, four will be held in Pune. The first meeting in Pune will be held on January 16 and 17 and Pune is getting all decked up with a facelift which is more like cosmetic changes to show-off for the guest’s stay in the city and things will return to ‘normal’ sooner than expected!

This reminded me of two things – the unforgettable (and unforgivable!) Commonwealth Games 2008 of which Pune was also a major venue and Vijay Prashard’s speech on decolonising the climate movement at COP26 Coalition’s People’s Summit for Climate Justice 2021 event at Glasgow. Both these things trigger two questions that are already there in the expression…

Who really holds the matchstick while the world burns…? 

Are we all really together in this…?

The answer might irk some and discomfort a few… but the fact remains the same… those would be few…

Festival of Light…!

We live in interesting times and in an amazing country that is unique for many reasons. For example, take the name and you won’t find any other country in the world having 3 historical, official and validated names. You are a modern Indian living in ancient Bharat as a proud Hindustani, aren’t you?

But that variety should be our strength and no one should be able to divide us on the grounds of our diversity. The only way we can do it is by Hindustan walking in its stride with a vision of Bharat taking India on its shoulders to see farther. We must proclaim our developed status but not before making sure that no one is left behind. Because the distinction in our minds between urban India, rural Bharat and a literary Hindustan transforms into our transactions impeding our unanimity as a nation.

जलाओ दिये पर रहे ध्यान इतना
अँधेरा धरा पर कहीं रह न जाए…

किसीके अंधेरे मिटा दो, 
किसीके सपने सजा दो,
दिलमें जगह बना लो,
अपने दुनियामें समा लो…‘

At the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam gave one of his finest speeches, where he articulated his visions for India. An excerpt from it reads,

I was in Hyderabad giving this lecture, when a 14 year old girl asked me for my autograph. I asked her what her goal in life is: She replied: “I want to live in a developed India.” For her, you, and I will have to build this developed India.’

A teenager sharing her profound vision for her country with the most powerful and most adored People’s President of India should make us feel as proud as responsible…!

Let us try and bridge that gap as our Rational Social Conscience and Collective National Responsibility…

उत्स्फूर्त जनाधार, संघटन कौशल्य

Trusteeship…

“संपत्ति की विषमता कृत्रिम व्यवस्था के कारण पैदा हुई है, ऐसा मानकर उसे छोड़ भी दें, तो मनुष्य की शारीरिक और बौद्धिक शक्ति की विषमता पूरी तरह दूर नहीं हो सकती। शिक्षण और नियमन से यह विषमता कुछ अंश तक कम की जा सकती। किंतु आदर्श की स्थिति में इस विषमता के सर्वथा अभाव की कल्पना नहीं की जा सकती। इसलिए शरीर, बुद्धि और संपत्ति इन तीनों में से जो जिसे प्राप्त हो, उसे यही समझना चाहिए कि वह सबके हित के लिए ही मिली है। यही ट्रस्टशिप का भाव है। अपनी शक्ति और संपत्ति का ट्रस्टी के नाते ही मनुष्यमात्र के हित के लिए प्रयोग करना चाहिए। ट्रस्टीशिप में अपरिग्रह की भावना निहित है।“

Even if we consider that the inequality of wealth has arisen due to artificial system and leave it still, the inequality of physical and intellectual power of man cannot be completely removed. This disparity can be reduced to some extent by education and regulation. However, complete absence of the inequality in an ideal situation, cannot be imagined. Therefore, whoever has physical strength, intellectual power or abundance of wealth should appreciate that it has been bestowed on him for the benefit of all. This is the spirit of trusteeship. As a trustee, the power and property should be used for the benefit of mankind. There is a sense of non-possession in trusteeship.

Although Change is inevitable and it’s the only constant in this ever-evolving cosmos; ‘positive change’ needs to be brought, if not forced, it seems. Because changing the perspective about a convenient ideology, conditioned behavior and comfortable lifestyle is not only difficult but causes disturbance which can be compared to the irking turbulence on the plane in the cloudy weather, you know!

As this is the exclusively Human perspective of the situation, the resolution for the reform also has to be completely human and based on intellect and understanding of humans, isn’t it? For any challenge, problem or situation, in general and for Environmental, Social and Political, in particular, the chronology of solution has to be Awareness – Sensitization – Deliberation – Call-for-action and ACTION!

As far as Environmental challenges are concerned, it should suffice to say that we (the people) are existent because of the environment and it is not the other way round. More importantly, it is us, the human beings who have caused those challenges and therefore it is not just our duty but Responsibility – individual, collective or Corporate Social – to correct the wrongs that are causing all the harm to the environment.

As we grow up to become ‘educated’, ‘independent’ and ‘established’, we get so engrossed in the worldly objectives like career, property, possessions, provisions that we tend to forget our parents who are the very reason of our existence and take them for granted assuming that they would be always there if and when we need them. It takes some emergency to remind us of their well-being which otherwise is always presumed. Any negligence or procrastination in taking care of elder’s needs could prove fatal and in the unfortunate case of loss of life, all we are left with is repentance and nothing else!

Same is the case with the Environment – it has produced us and we are not the masters of it. If we don’t stop acting careless about it straightway, it would be too late even to repent about it. Each and every human is supposed to act about it with immediate effect and the very convenient defense, ‘who am I to do something about it and what can I do… alone?’ has following comeback…

Just like a post about 10 things that require zero talent (?) being viral nowadays, there are FOUR things that ANY individual can do ANYWHERE on this PLANET in any condition at ZERO cost…

• Reduce – limit the consumption of anything to the adequate measures and avoid excess use of any resource.
• Repair – Get rid of the ‘Use and throw’ mentality and try to mend the broken things including ideologies, value-systems and relations, may be!
• Reuse – Almost anything can be reused and if it cannot, it must be destroyed in a proper way to avoid the landfill – the biggest danger to environment.  
• Recycle – Almost everything can be used to create something new just like the Buddha Story – read it here if you would like to.

First it offered me ability to talk (and listen) to dear-but-not-near ones…

Then it helped me to use it from any room with its extended capacities…
Moving on, it cut off the cord and freed me to move around while talking…

Eventually it became hand-held to replace all my accessories like –

– Calculator
– Calendar
– Notepad
– Organizer
– Map
– Computer
– Wallet
– Keys

Also, it helped me get rid of long queues for virtually anything out there.

It takes care of my infotainment as well as well-being with its organized approach.

It suggests me
– where to go with
– what means of transport,
– which route would be better,
– what to wear,
– what to eat,
– what to see,
– what to read,
– what and how should I feel,
– how and with whom to sleep…
all with the help of its Artificial Intelligence that knows everything about me and… ‘my’ choices…?

It has not only made me ‘mobile’ as I can be on the move always, but it has also made me care-free and thoughtless as it takes all the decisions for me and saves my energy that is meant to be preserved and utilized for running the race which increases our PPP…

And if I choose to be more independent and follow my own heart using my own rationale, you ask? Then I would be suffering from FOMO – the deadliest and almost incurable disease humans have ever discovered… or invented?

Now, it has not only made it impossible to talk to dear-but-not-near ones but also disabled talking to near-and-dear-ones as no one wants to miss anything that is happening in the #metaverse which can be liked, shared, tagged or commented on… Nothing @universe can match it, you know!

Ah! And now I can move around to talk, to shop, to show-off and to get used by… My-Phone!

She is not a Celebrity and those are not Paparazzi…
Just Affectionate Appreciation of Awesome Achievements…!

PS: My daughter bought a New High-end Smartphone – First with her own earnings… Something to be proud of for sure… and an opportunity to reflect on its evolution, hoping everybody realizes that it’s just a gadget to be used for two-way communication with mutual agreement and not the other way round… Way to go!

अनित्य…!

बी रुजतं, मुळं फुटतात, मुळं ओल शोधतात.
जमिनीच्या उदरातून पाणी मिळतं, पोषण सुरू होतं.
बीज अंकुरतं आणि मातीच्या थरातून बाहेर डोकावतं.
उन्हं लागून बाळसं धरू लागलेल्या रोपाचं खोड होतं, त्याला फांद्या फुटतात.
फांद्याना पानं फुटतात आणि पानांच्या फुलोऱ्याने लगडलेले झाड हळूहळू डवरून येतं.
पानांच्या टोकाला फुलं उमलतात, फुलांच्या गंधाने फुलपाखरे, भुंगे, मुंग्या आकर्षित होतात.
फुलांचे परागकण वाऱ्याने, पाण्याच्या प्रवाहात वाहून, किटकांच्या माध्यमातून पसरतात आणि परागीभवन घडते.
यातून फळं रुजते आणि बहुदा साऱ्या फळांना खूप बिया असतात आणि प्रत्येक बीमध्ये वृक्ष होण्याची क्षमता असते.
पशू-पक्षी फळे खाऊन बिया टाकतात किंवा पिकलेली फळे झाडावरून गळून पडतात आणि गराचे विघटन होऊन बिया मातीत मिसळतात.

…अशा तऱ्हेने फळाचे बी पुन्हा मातीत पडून रुजते आणि एक चक्र पूर्ण होऊन दुसरे सुरू होते…

सृष्टीत काहीही नित्य नसते, प्रत्येक गोष्ट एका रुपातून दुसऱ्या रूपात सतत परिवर्तीत होत असते आणि म्हणूनच ‘अनित्य’ हाच जीवनाचा मूळ भाव आहे, तीच त्याची प्रकृती आहे आणि प्रवृत्ती ही ! त्यामुळे येणारा प्रत्येक क्षण हा उदंड शक्यतांनी भरलेला असतो पण त्यातील कुठलीही शक्यता त्या क्षणाच्या आगमनापूर्वी फलद्रूप होऊ शकत नाहीत.

तेव्हा, सृष्टीच्या ‘अनित्य’ स्थायीभावास अनुसरून आयुष्य जगतांना, येणाऱ्या प्रत्येक क्षणातील शक्यतांची उघड्या डोळ्याने, सजग अंत:करणाने आणि सतर्क प्रज्ञेने जाणीव ठेवणे ही शहाणीव आणि त्यांचा विवेकपूर्ण स्वीकार ही बोधी…!

अलौकिक…!

ही माणसं वेगळीच असतात. म्हणजे जगावेगळीच. यांच्या धर्म-अर्थ-काम-मोक्ष या पुरुषार्थाच्या संकल्पना निराळ्याच असतात. यांच्या कल्पनाशक्तीला दाद दयावी, यांच्या उपक्रमांना सलाम करावा की यांच्या झोकून देऊन नि:स्वार्थ कार्यमग्नतेने प्रेरित व्हावे काहीच समजत नाही.

अगदी पहिल्या वाढदिवसापासून पन्नाशी, साठी, पंचाहत्तरी ते सहस्त्रचंद्रदर्शन असे अनेक समारंभपूर्वक सोहळे आपण पाहिले असतील, आयोजित केले असतील आणि कधी कधी स्वत: अनुभवले देखील असतील. पण असे अनवट वाढदिवस साजरे करण्याची आपण कल्पनाही करू शकत नाही.

यातील पहिले, शिवाजी ट्रेल दुर्ग संवर्धन संस्थेचे धडाडीचे कार्यकर्ते आमचे लाडके ‘मेजर’! हा माणूस अफाट आहेच. याने आजवर मनुष्यासह अनेक प्राण्यांचे जीव वाचवले आहेत आणि अगदी जंगली प्राण्यांचीही जीवघेण्या परिस्थितीतून सुटका केली आहे, इथवर जाणून होतो आणि ठीकही होते.

यावेळी मात्र या माणसाने ४५वा वाढदिवस साजरा करायला असा उपक्रम हाती घेतला (आणि यशस्वी केला हे ओघानेच आले!) की आता या कायम उत्साहाने सळसळणाऱ्या युवकाने थेट ‘मांझी द माउंटन मॅन‘ची आठवण करून दिली. तपशीलासाठी वाचा पुणे सकाळने घेतलेली या कामगिरीची दखल…

या रेकॉर्डसाठी या कामगिरीचे इंग्रजीत शब्दांकन करण्याचे भाग्य लाभले एवढेच आमचे यातील योगदान !

दुसरे केवळ अशक्य गृहस्थ म्हणजे डॉक्टर अभिजित सोनवणे – डॉक्टर फॉर बेगर्स – भिक्षेकऱ्यांचे डॉक्टर. हा माणूस जे काम करतो ते तर अलौकिक आहेच पण एवढे अवघड, दमणूकीचे काम करून या माणसाला त्याबद्दल एवढे तपशीलवार लिहिण्याची उर्जा कुठून मिळते हे तर कायमचे कुतूहल आहे.

परवा १७ एप्रिलला या अवलीयाचा वाढदिवस झाला तो त्याने कसा साजरा केला वाचा त्याच्याच शब्दात…

एवढे तरी आपण नक्कीच करू शकू… नाही का?

हितगुज…?

पूर्वी लोक पत्र लिहीत असत, पत्र म्हणजे अर्धी भेट मानत. आम्ही अजूनही लिहितो अधून मधून, खूपच उचंबळून आलं की. खूप भरून आलं की भरभरून व्यक्त व्हायला लागतं. तिथे हे मेसेज वगैरे अगदीच बिनकामाचे आणि ते व्हॉटसअॅप वगैरे तर फारच कुचकामी. एकतर खूप सारं बोलायला लागतं किंवा लिहायला तरी, तेव्हाच मोकळं वाटतं. पण मुद्दा तो नाही, मुद्दा आहे पत्र. पत्र हा लेखनप्रकार साहित्यात मोडत नसला तरी समाजमनाच्या जडणघडणीत आपली जागा (आणि आब) राखून आहे. अगदी अब्राहम लिंकनच्या ‘हेडमास्तरांना पत्र‘ पासून थेट माहेरवाशिण बायकोने पुलंच्या ‘असामी’ला धाडलेले छत्रपतींच्या आज्ञापत्राच्या धाटणीचे सूचनापत्र अशी ऐतिहासिक, भावनिक तथा व्यावहारिक परंपरा लाभलेल्या या पत्रलेखनाबद्दल शालेय पाठयक्रमात ‘स्वाध्याय’ नसता तरच नवल.

शाळा सोडतांना शाळा सोडल्याच्या दाखल्याबरोबर स्वाध्यायासह इतरही अनेक गैरसोयीच्या गोष्टी शाळेतच सोडण्याची देखील एक ‘विकसनशील’ परंपरा आहे. जणू काही या गोष्टी आपण आयुष्यभर सोबतीसाठी बरोबर घेतल्या तर शाळेत येणाऱ्या पुढच्या पिढयांची त्यांच्यावाचून आबाळच होईल ! यातील शाळेबरोबरच सोडायच्या दोन महत्वाच्या गोष्टी म्हणजे – स्वयंशिस्त आणि नागरिकशास्त्र – मुळात दोन्ही ‘स्कोअरिंग सब्जेक्ट्स’ नसल्याने आधीपासूनच ऑप्शनला टाकायची सोय असते अन त्यांची वकिली करायला कुठलेच कोचिंग क्लासेस पुढे येत नसल्याने बिचारे अजूनच अडगळीत पडतात. खरे तर एवढे दोनच विषय नीट समजले आणि अंगी बाणवता आले तर वयाच्या कुठल्याही टप्प्यावर जगातील काहीही शिकणे शक्य व्हावे. पण लक्षात कोण घेतो?

आम्ही केवळ महाविद्यालयात प्रवेश घेण्याची पूर्वअट म्हणून शाळा सोडल्याचा दाखला घेतला, अन्यथा आम्ही आजही मनाने शाळेतच आहोत. यालाच बहुतेक ओल्ड स्कूल मानसिकता म्हणत असावे का? असो. तर त्यामुळे आमच्या पत्रलेखनात चार गोष्टी कालत्रयी बदलल्या नाहीत, अगदी दर २४ तासाला स्टेट्स (पूर्वी हे कमवायला आयुष्य खपवावे लागत असे, म्हणे !) बदलण्याच्या काळातही ! पहिली गोष्ट पानाच्या सर्वात वरती मधोमध II श्री II अशी प्राणप्रतिष्ठा, त्याखाली उजव्या कोपऱ्यात वार व दिनांक, मग डावीकडे समास सोडून मायना आणि सर्वात खाली समारोप करतांना ‘कळावे, लोभ असावा.’ या शेवटच्या तीन शब्दात जे सौहार्द्र सामावले आहे त्यात मानवी संबंधांचे जितके आयाम आहेत तेवढे कुठल्याही अतिप्रगत सोशल नेटवर्कमध्येही सापडणे शक्य नाही. 

यातील ‘लोभ’ (हा मोह-मायेशी संबंधीत ‘हव्यास’ अशा अर्थाचा नसून, मायेच्या आत्मीयता, ममत्व या स्वरुपाचा आहे !) असावा’मध्ये जेवढी मायेची ऊब तेवढाच प्रेमळ अधिकार आणि नात्याची वीण घट्ट ठेवण्याच्या ग्वाहीबरोबर अपेक्षाही, पण ‘कळावे’ मध्ये याहून अधिक बरेच काही…! त्यातील सगळ्यात महत्वाचे म्हणजे निरंतर संवादण्याची आस्था, आपुलकी आणि आग्रह ! केवळ ख्याली-खुशाली किंवा फक्त सुखवार्ताच कळावी म्हणून नाही तर सारेच समाचार समजावे, म्हणून ‘कळावे’ ! मुळात आप्त-स्वकीय स्वजन यांना आपल्या सुख-दु:खात सहभागी करून घेण्यातील समानुभूतीचा उद्गार म्हणजे ‘कळावे’ ! तोरण दारी आणि मरण दारी कार्य असते म्हणून जावे ही जनरीत झाली पण अशा प्रसंगी उपचार म्हणून सारेच जमतात, त्यात व्यवहाराचा भाग अधिक असतो, सौहार्द्र असतेच असे नाही. सौहार्द्र वाढण्यासाठी स्नेह हवा जो कधीच उपचारांच्या अधीन नसतो. स्नेह हा आत्मीयता आणि सहवेदना यांच्या खांद्यावर लहानाचा मोठा होतो आणि संवादाच्या सेतुवरून इकडून तिकडे बागडतो. तोच संवाद निरंतर रहावा म्हणून ‘कळावे’ ! 

याशिवाय ‘कळावे’ यामध्ये अनुस्यूत असते ती पोच… म्हणजे पोचपावती. बऱ्याच जणांना कधी, कुठे, कसे वागावे याची पोच नसते ती निराळी. अलीकडे भ्रष्टाचाराचा शिष्टाचार झाल्यापासून सामाजिक संकेत आणि नीती-नियम इतके बदललेत की वेषभूशेसह बोलण्या-वागण्याची पोच नसणे हे मॉडर्न असण्याचे लक्षण आणि ‘इन थिंग’ असण्याचे दिवस आहेत… ‘ट्रेंडिंग…’ यू नो ! तेही एक असो. तर पोचपावती म्हणजे साध्या शुद्ध मराठीत अॅकनॉलेजमेंट ! तुम्ही मला काही पाठविले ते प्राप्त झाले हे उलटटपाली कळविण्याची नैतिक जबाबदारी. आता यातील ‘नैतिक’ आणखीन ‘जबाबदारी’ या दोन्हीपाशी मिलेनीयल अडखळले तर ती कुणाची सामाजिक जबाबदारी?

पूर्वी बंद पाकिटात पत्र पाठवितांना त्यावर पाठविणाऱ्याचा तपशील ‘प्रेषक’ अशा शीर्षकाने लिहिण्याची पद्धत होती आणि ज्याला उद्देशून पाठविले तो ‘प्रेषित’…  म्हणजे अज्ञ लोकांनी क्रुसावर चढवला तो ईश्वराचा संदेशवाहक नव्हे तर सूज्ञ लोक ज्याच्याशी काही हितगूज करू पाहता तो संदेशग्राहक ! पण माणसांत हल्ली प्रेक्षक आणि पोषित असे दोनच प्रकार शिल्लक असल्याने आणि मुळात पाकीट बंद करण्याचा संस्कार कालबाह्य झाल्याने सारेच कसे उघड उघड चालते. व्यवस्था ज्याचे पोषण करते तो पोषित आणि तो जो काही तमाशा दाखवेल तो टाळ्या पिटत उघड्या डोळ्याने निष्क्रियपणे बघणारे ते प्रेक्षक ! व्यवस्थेला याहून अधिक (विचार-)विनिमयाची अपेक्षा नाही कारण विचारापेक्षा प्रचार आणि संभाषणापेक्षा भाषण अधिक प्रभावी ठरते असा सत्योत्तर अनुभव सांगतो. आणि प्रचार आणखीन भाषण या दोन्ही प्रकारांना चर्चा, विचारांचे आदान-प्रदान यांचे वावडे, त्यांना हवा फक्त श्रोता ज्याच्या फास्ट लोकलला श्रवण आणि भाषण यांच्या मध्ये अध्ययन, चिंतन, मनन असल्या बिनकामाच्या छोट्या छोट्या स्टेशन्सचा अडसर नसेल.

दूरदर्शनवर अलीकडे एक नवीन जाहिरात दिसू लागली आहे. ८ करोंड हून अधिक गाणी ऐकण्याची ‘सोय’ असल्याने, कानाला ‘श्रवणयंत्र’ लावलं की आजूबाजूला काय घडते आहे याचा त्रास करून न घेता स्वत:च्या मनोरंजनात मग्न राहण्याच्या ‘सुविधे’ची. स्वमग्नता, जो कालपरवापर्यंत एक मनोविकार मानला जात असे, आज त्याचा व्यापार होतो आहे आणि तुम्हाला जन्मत: या विकाराचा ‘लाभ’ झाला नसेल तर नाराज व्हायचे कारण नाही, तुम्ही तो विकत घेऊ शकता ! अत्याधुनिक उपकरणांमध्ये न्यूक्लिअर मिसाईल्सपेक्षाही विघातक आविष्कार जर कशाचा असेल तर तो आहे या ‘श्रवणयंत्र’ अर्थात हेडफोन्सचा. भौतिक प्रगतीच्या नादात आधीच पराकोटीच्या स्वकेन्द्रित झालेल्या माणसाला या आयुधाने केवळ स्वमग्नच नाही तर सभोवतालाप्रति अविचलीत (वाचा: बधीर) करण्याचे मोठेच क्रांतिकारी काम केले. याची तुलना होऊ शकणारे दुसरे एकमेव ‘साधन’ म्हणजे लाऊड स्पीकर अर्थात भोंगे ! महाराष्ट्राच्या ‘राज’कारणात तूर्तास हा विषय फारच तापलेला असल्याने त्यावर जास्त वाच्यता नको, चटके बसायचे. तथापि, ऐकायला हेडफोन्स आणि लाऊड स्पीकर परस्परविरोधी वाटत असले तरी, मानवी प्रज्ञेचा बुद्धिभेद करून विचारक्षमता कुंठित करणे आणि माणसाचा तमस वाढविणे या उद्देशाबाबत दोन्ही उपकरणांचा एकच सूर लागतो !

कुठलाही मोठा बदल, विशेषत: मानवी संबंधात, हा केवळ दोनच पद्धतीने होता असा एक समज आहे – उत्क्रांतीतून किंवा क्रांतीतून – बाय इव्होल्यूशन ऑर बाय रिव्होल्यूशन. उत्क्रांतीचा मार्ग जाणीवेतून येतो म्हणून सहसा शाहणीव देतो. जगण्याची, सभोवतालाची समज समृद्ध करतो तर क्रांतीचा मार्ग बहुदा उणीवेतून येतो. नवनवीन उपकरणांचे शोध, माध्यमक्रांती यामागे कुठल्या उणिवा दडलेल्या आहेत याचा जाणीवपूर्वक शोध घेतला तर बऱ्याच अकल्पित गोष्टी समजू शकतील. उर्जेचा शोध लागल्यापासून माणसाने झपाट्याने प्रगती केली आणि तंत्रज्ञानाने विकासाचा वेग महाविद्युल्लतेपरी वाढविला. माणसाने कोटीच्या कोटी (अक्षरश:) उड्डाणे घेऊन मागच्या ३०० वर्षात पार केले नव्हते एवढे अंतर गेल्या तीस-चाळीस वर्षात पार केले.

या प्रवासात अनेक कालबाह्य आणि कुचकामी थांबे मागे पडले. फास्ट लोकल्स बिनमहत्वाचे स्टेशन्स वगळू लागल्या. डांबराचा गुणधर्म अंगाखांद्यावर बाळगणारे आणि रंगरंगोटीने सजलेले टोलधारी उन्नत महामार्ग वाटेतल्या गावखेड्यांशी फटकून वागू लागले. पूर्वी गावाच्या पोटातून जाणारे मार्ग आता खालच्या वस्तीशी ओळखदेख न ठेवता उड्डाणपूलांच्या मार्गे परस्पर डोक्यावरून पसार होऊ लागले. गंतव्यस्थानाला पोहचण्याची घाई ‘वाढता वाढता वाढे…’ अशी नित्य वर्धिष्णू राहिल्याने पळती झाडे मागे पडून ‘बायपास’ची संख्या ऑर्गनाइज्ड पद्धतीने वाढू लागली.

अशा जीवघेण्या वेगामुळे ‘डरके आगे जीत है…’वाले थ्रील मिळत असेल तर मिळो बापडे पण आधी ‘डर’च मिळतो हे जाहिरातीलाही नाकारता येत नाही. भय घालवण्याचा सर्वकालिक रामबाण उपाय म्हणजे साथ – सोबत. लहानपणी भुतांच्या गोष्टी ऐकल्या की आधी लघुशंका लागायची आणि मग लघुशंकेलाही सोबत लागायची. ‘कुणीतरी आहे तिथं…’ची भीती घालवण्यासाठी ‘कुणीतरी आहे सोबत…’ यासारखा धीर नाही. मोठेपणी या ‘कुणीतरी’च्या भयाची जागा भविष्य म्हणजेच उद्याच्या काळजीने घेतली आणि उद्याबद्दलची अनिश्चितता आज अनेक व्यसनात दिलासा शोधू लागली. एका मोठ्या आणि उद्योगी समुदायाला निरुद्योगी करण्याची ‘आयडिया’ व्यावसायिकांना सुचली आणि संकटातही संधी शोधणाऱ्या राजकारण्यांना त्यात बरेच लाभार्थी दिसू लागताच रोज दीड जीबीचा रतीब सुरू झाला.

दोन पायावर तोल साधणे जमल्यामुळे पाठीचा कणा ताठ होऊन मोकळ्या झालेल्या ज्या हातांनी माणसाने स्वत:ची सृष्टी निर्माण केली त्या हातांना एका मामुली उपकरणाने स्थानबद्ध केले. मोठ्या मिनतवारीने शिकून सवरून अंगठेबहाद्दराचा बोरूबहाद्दर झालेल्या माणसाचा पुन्हा अंगठेबहाद्दर व्हायला एक जेमतेम विशीतली कोवळी ‘माध्यम’-क्रांती पुरली. एकेकाळी समाजप्रिय असणारा मनुष्यप्राणी, वेळेअभावी प्रत्यक्ष भेटून सुरेल बैठक जमविण्याऐवजी समाजमाध्यमाचे माध्यम होऊन बे(भे)सूर झुंडशाही करण्यात धन्यता मानू लागला. अंगठ्यासह हाताच्या पाचही बोटांच्या सर्जनशीलतेचा, त्यांनी मिळून बनणाऱ्या मुठीच्या सामर्थ्याचा माणसाला पडलेला विसर एकवेळ क्षम्य मानता आला असता परंतु त्याबरोबरीने संकुचित मानसिकतेने विचारांना पडलेल्या मर्यादा, विवेकाचा जाणीवपूर्वक केलेला त्याग आणि क्षुद्र, तत्कालिक स्वार्थासाठी केवळ नियतीशीच नाही तर येणाऱ्या पिढ्यांसह संपूर्ण सृष्टीशी केलेली तडजोड याला कसे माफ करावे ?

हे असे का झाले याची चिकित्सा करता अनेक कारणे सापडतील. पण साऱ्याचे मूळ मात्र एकच – भय, असुरक्षितता, अस्थिरता. प्रगती मध्ये गती अनुस्यूत असल्याने जेवढ्या वेगाने प्रगती होईल त्याच्या कित्येक पट वेगाने जगण्याची गती वाढेल हे ओघाने आलेच. आज जगण्याची स्पर्धा आणि त्यामुळे गती इतकी भयाकारी झाली आहे की ज्यासाठी सगळी उठाठेव चालली आहे ते चलन जरी खिशातून पडले तरी थांबून ते उचलण्यापेक्षा तेवढ्या वेळात त्याहून जास्त कमवणे शक्य असल्यास तेवढाही खोळंबा माणसाला नको आहे, ठहराव, उसंत, निवांतपणा यांची तर बातच नको. अशा परिस्थितीत हितगुज-चर्चा अशा निरर्थक उद्योगांपेक्षा आपल्याच भ्रामक जगात रमणे कधीही सोपे आणि सोईस्कर !

म्हणतात तेव्हा त्यांना, ‘मी, माझे, मला’ यात आकंठ बुडालेल्या माणसाने दुसऱ्याशी हृदयापासून संवाद साधण्याऐवजी मनाची सारी कवाडे बंद करून भलत्याच अर्थाने अंतर्मुख होणे अभिप्रेत नाही. अशा उफराट्या आध्यात्माच्या मार्गावर एकटे पडणे ही संतांचे लक्षण तर नाहीच पण समर्थांना मूर्खाचे आणखी एक लक्षण सापडल्याने नवा (उ)दासबोध लिहिण्याचे निमित्त मात्र ठरू शकते.

तात्विक किंवा अध्यात्मिक राहू दे, अगदी न्यूटनचा तिसरा संपूर्ण शास्त्रीय नियम सुद्धा क्रियेला प्रतिक्रिया गृहीत धरतो, मग संवादामध्ये सादेला प्रतिसाद गृहीत धरण्याचा संकेत हा शास्त्रीय का मानू नये ? हाकेला ओ देण्याची पद्धत पशुपक्ष्यांमध्येसुद्धा आढळते तर अतिप्रगत माणसाला आपल्या प्रगत असण्याचा टेंभा मिरविण्यासाठी भलत्याच अर्थाने उदासीन रहावेसे का वाटावे? आधुनिकतेच्या अति हव्यासापोटी फाटक्या कपड्यांची फॅशन व्हावी तद्वत माध्यमांच्या अतिरेकी वापरात संवादाची लक्तरे निघाली तरी चालतील? साधनक्रांतीने ‘शब्देविण संवादु’ची भलतीच सोय करून दिलेली असल्याने, प्रतिसादाची अपेक्षा न धरता ‘डबल ब्ल्यू टिक’वर समाधान मानावे? रिकाम्या गाभाऱ्याला ‘भाव तेथे देव’ म्हणत मनोभावे नमस्कार करावा आणि आपली भक्ती पोहचली, अनुग्रहाची सक्ती नाही एवढाच साऱ्याचा भावार्थ?

बाकी, वैभव म्हणाला तेच खरे… तुम्ही व्हॉटसअॅपवर आहात ना, तर मी तुमचा आहे!

‘संस्कृती’च्या उपासनेसाठी
‘संस्कारां’च्या अभ्यासवर्गात
गणवेशधारी बेगमी करणारे

बेगडी अस्मिता जपायची म्हणून
रोज प्रबोधन संदेश पाठवणारे

तो निग्रही होता की हेकट
तो कठोर होता की हळवा
तो कणखर होता की लाचार
तो द्रष्टा होता की संकुचित
तो धार्मिक होता की मार्मिक
तो सत्याग्रही होता की दुराग्रही
तो अहिंसावादी होता की दुबळा
तो संवेदनशील होता की समन्वयी
तो सहिष्णू होता की अनुनयी
तो राष्ट्रवादी होता की राष्ट्रद्रोही
तो महात्मा होता की हुतात्मा…

तो माणूस होता की विचार…?

धादांत असत्य, अर्धसत्य आणि सत्योत्तर 
साऱ्यांनी मिळून कितीही राळ उडवली,
मिथके रचली अन् भ्रमितं मांडली तरी
अंततः एकच सत्य शिल्लक राहील…

तो माणसाचा आतला आवाज होता
तो माणसाचा विचारी सद्-विवेक होता
तो मानवतेच्या एकात्मतेचे प्रतिक होता
तो प्रत्येक टेम्परामेंटचा कॉन्शन्स होता

आणि म्हणूनच…
हजार कोशीशोंके बावजूद
…गांधी मरा नहीं

Warnings…?

On the 26th of January 1950, we are going to enter into a life of contradictions. In politics we will have equality and in social and economic life we will have inequality. In politics we will be recognizing the principle of one man one vote and one vote one value. In our social and economic life, we shall, by reason of our social and economic structure, continue to deny the principle of one man one value. How long shall we continue to live this life of contradictions? How long shall we continue to deny equality in our social and economic life? If we continue to deny it for long, we will do so only by putting our political democracy in peril. We must remove this contradiction at the earliest possible moment or else those who suffer from inequality will blow up the structure of this political democracy so laboriously built up by this Assembly.

टांगायला गैरसोयीच्या गोष्टी…

उदाहरणार्थ,
समता, निरपेक्षता, तर्क, विवेक… इत्यादी
आणि झालंच तर त्यांची महापुरुषरुपी प्रतीकेही…
…काळ-वेळ बघून त्यांच्याकडे पाठ फिरवायला.

दुसरी खुंटी, बाजूलाच…
सत्य आणि असत्याच्या खिळ्यांनी ठोकलेली
‘बातमी’च्या जोरावर जगणाऱ्या ‘सत्योत्तरा’ची…
या खुंटीवर अडकवलेल्या सोन्याच्या साखळीचे
दुसरे टोक गळेपट्ट्यात…

केवळ धन्याच्या सुरक्षेसाठी रात्रंदिन दक्ष राहून
दिलदार धनिकाची सोय पाहता पाहता
आपल्याही उदनिर्वाहाची सोय पहाणाऱ्या आणि
एरवी डोळे मिटून बकध्यानात तंद्री लावणाऱ्या
इमानी पाळीव प्राण्यांप्रमाणे…

अडचणीच्या गोष्टींचे अस्तित्वच नाकारण्यासाठी
दोन्ही डोळे मिटून घेणाऱ्या भाविकांना पडतोय
विसर त्यांच्या आराध्य दैवताच्या तिसऱ्या नेत्राचा
रुद्राच्या तांडवाची परिसीमा अशा प्रतिकाचा…

‘मौनं सर्वार्थ साधनं’ची सोय नसते सेवकरूपी सम्राटाला
मार्गक्रमण करावेच लागते मानगुटीवरच्या समंधासह
‘तू बोला, मैं चला…’ची पंचवीस आवर्तने चुकत नाहीत
आणि मौनात राहून डोक्याची शंभर शकले होणे अटळ
अशा समयी गोष्टी सांगीन युक्तीच्या चार हाच आपत्धर्म

…पण कितीही त्रासदायक वाटला तरी
वेताळच आपला तारणहार आहे याचा
विसर पडू नये विक्रमादित्याला,

नीतीची लक्तरे टांगता वेशीवर
समृद्ध विकासाची उंचावे लाट…
सचोटी रडते सत्य-निष्ठेच्या दारी
सोय लावते ‘नव’मूल्यांशी पाट…

तत्व तिलांजलीला बक्षीस भरघोस
श्रावणी खाण्या नित्य सोन्याचे ताट
सदऱ्या-धोतरा खिजवण्या अन्
नव्या उत्सवी पोशाखाचा थाट…

त्यांचा धर्म त्यांची श्रद्धा त्यांची भक्ती
भोगण्याची सक्ती, जगण्यावर काट…
अंधभक्तीची अंधश्रद्धा बोकाळता
कर्णही धरीतसे कौरवसभेची वाट…

धर्माधिष्ठित राजसत्तेने सर्वत्र
घालता विवेकवधाचा घाट
प्रतिहारी जो व्हायचा शाहीर
व्यवस्था करीतसे त्याचा भाट…!

सतर्कता…!

टूथपेस्ट, साबण की तेल हे महत्वाचे नाही, खोक्यात येणारी एक नित्योपयोगी वस्तू एवढे पुरेसे आहे कारण, तिची (त्या वस्तूची !) गोष्ट, त्याचा कार्यकारणभाव आणि (नेहमीप्रमाणे) गोष्टीचे तात्पर्य महत्वाचे ! तर अशा कुठल्याशा वस्तूच्या कारखान्याच्या व्यवस्थापनाला एका वेगळ्याच अडचणीला सामोरे जावे लागले. त्यांच्या वितरकांना बऱ्याच ग्राहकांकडून चक्क रिकामे खोके मिळाल्याची तक्रार आली आणि असे वारंवार घडू लागल्यास बाजारात कंपनीची प्रतिमा खराब होऊन कंपनीला मोठा आर्थिक फटका बसू शकतो अशी भीती निर्माण झाली.

यावर उपाय म्हणून कंपनीने तातडीने एक उच्चस्तरीय तज्ञ समिती नेमली आणि त्यांना परिस्थितीचा सखोल अभ्यास करून उपाययोजना सुचविण्याची विनंती केली. कारखान्याच्या परिसराची हवाई टेहळणी पासून संपूर्ण यंत्रसामुग्रीचे परीक्षण आणि प्रत्येक कामगाराची वैयक्तिक मुलाखत घेतल्यावर कुठेही काही बिघाड आढळला नाही. परिणामी समितीने, कारखान्यात जेथून खोक्यांचे वितरण सुरू होते तेथे एक वजनमापक यंत्र बसविण्याची सूचना केली जेणेकरून रिकाम्या खोक्याचे वजन कमी भरल्याने एक अलार्म वाजेल आणि रिकामा खोका काढून टाकता येईल.

बराच निधी खर्च करून कंपनीने तज्ञ समितीची सूचना अमलात आणली आणि यंत्राने आपले काम सुरु केले. आता रिकामा खोका बाजारात जाणार नाही या विचाराने व्यवस्थापन निर्धास्त झाले. पण थोड्याच दिवसात एका वेगळ्याच अनुभवाने व्यवस्थापनाला पुन्हा बुचकळ्यात पाडले. वजनमापक यंत्र बसवल्यापासून रिकामे खोकेच सापडत नसल्याचा अहवाल आला. आता हे कसे घडले याचा शोध घेण्यासाठी व्यवस्थापक पुन्हा कारखान्यात पोहचले. तपासाअंती आढळले ते असे…

रिकाम्या खोक्यांची संख्या बरीच असल्याने वजनमापक यंत्र सारखे अलार्म वाजवायचे आणि त्यामुळे कामाची गती कमी होऊन खोळंबा तर व्हायचाच शिवाय त्या अलार्मच्या किरकिऱ्या आवाजाचा त्रास व्हायचा तो वेगळाच. यावर उपाय म्हणून एका कल्पक कामगाराने वजनमापक यंत्राच्याअलीकडे वितरण पट्ट्याच्या समोर एक पंखा उभा केला. पट्ट्यावरून रिकामा खोका पंख्यासमोर आला की हलका असल्याने पंख्याच्या हवेने उडून खाली पडायचा आणि वजनमापक यंत्रापर्यंत न पोहचल्याने अलार्मही वाजायचा नाही आणि वितरणाची साखळीही तुटायची नाही!

उच्चस्तरीय तज्ञ समितीने हा साधा-सोपा-सहज-स्वस्त उपाय का सुचवला नाही या विचाराने व्यवस्थापन समिती अजूनही संभ्रमात आहे, बघा तुम्हाला काही सुचतय का…?

विजेवर चालणाऱ्या उपकरणांचा वापर होणार नसेल किंवा कमी होणार असेल तेव्हा विजेची बचत व्हावी म्हणून आधुनिक तंत्रज्ञानाच्या सहाय्याने पॉवर-सेव्हिंग मोडची सोय करून दिली. वापरकर्ता जेव्हा उपकरण वापरत नसेल तेव्हा ते अशा पॉवर-सेव्हिंग मोडवर अर्थात मेडीटेशन फेजमध्ये जाते. व्यवस्थेच्या बाबतीत मात्र जेव्हा उपभोक्ता तिचा अपेक्षित आणि सुयोग्य वापर करत नसेल तेव्हा ती पॉवर-मिसयूज मोडवर अर्थात सेलिब्रेशन फेजमध्ये जाते !

पोस्ट पूर्णपणे अराजकीय आणि व्यवस्थापन-वस्तुपाठाशी निगडीत असली तरीही, डोळस आणि विवेकी लोकांनी जमल्यास यावर विचार [चिंतन नव्हे] करण्यास हरकत नाही… एव्हरीवन एल्स, सॉरी फॉर द इंटरव्हेनशन… प्लीज कंटिन्यू द सेलिब्रेशन !

शिक्षक दिन…!

मनुष्य आपल्या जैवीकतेच्या, आपल्या सभोवतालाच्या किंवा आपल्या कर्माच्या अधीन असतो असे समजणे ही फार मोठी चूक आहे. माणसाला निवडीचे सामर्थ्य आहे. अन्यायी समाजव्यवस्थेच्या विरोधात तो बंड करू शकतो. माणसाच्या या वैशिष्ट्यावरील संपूर्ण विश्वास हाच नैतिक लोकशाहीचा भक्कम आधार आहे. मनुष्य म्हणजे काही इतिहासाच्या अथांग सागरातील केवळ अशी लाट नव्हे जी स्वत: प्रवाहपतीत होऊन लोंढ्याबरोबर वाहून जातांना प्रवाहाचे सारथ्य करण्याच्या स्वप्नरंजनात रमेल… माणूस स्वत: नवनवीन प्रवाह आणि विचार निर्माण करून इतिहास समृद्ध करू शकतो. इतिहासाकडून खरतर आपण काहीच शिकत नाही. मनुष्य इतिहासातील धडे गिरवून भविष्याप्रति सजग, जागरूक तथा जबाबदार होईल…?

माणसाच्या वैज्ञानिक आणिक तांत्रिक प्रगतीचा आलेख अत्यंत भव्य-दिव्य आणि श्वास रोखून धरायला लावणारा आहे खरा पण नैतिक दृष्ट्या माणसाने आपल्या जन्मापासून एक इंच देखील प्रगती केलेली नाही. भौतिक प्रगतीच्या बरोबरीने माणसाच्या स्वार्थात आणि असोशीमध्ये निरंतर वाढच होत गेली. परिणामत: तो विवेकाने निवड करेल आणि या जगास भविष्यासाठी सुरक्षित राखेल याची काहीही शाश्वती नाही. हे भविष्यवेधी विवेचन निराशावादी म्हणून पहिले जाऊ नाही कारण जग वास्तवात निश्चितपणे विनाशाकडे वाटचाल करीत आहे. माणसाबद्दलची एक विलक्षण गोष्ट कायम मनी जपायला हवी, माणूस निसर्गापेक्षा भिन्न आहे आणि म्हणूनच अत्यंत अकल्पित, अतर्क्य आणि लहरी आहे. कुठलीही बाह्य-शक्ती, उपयोजित बलच काय अगदी परिस्थितीची गरजसुद्धा त्याला कुठलीही गोष्ट करण्यास बाध्य करू शकत नाही. स्वत:च्या उबदार, अंधाऱ्या कोषात रहाण्यास तो मूलत: मुक्त आहे. अनादी अनंत अशा वेळेचा आणि अवकाशाचा तो स्वामी आहे त्यामुळे त्याच्या क्षमता आणि शक्यता अमर्यादित आहेत. म्हणून केवळ त्याची स्वत:ची इच्छा असेल तरच तो स्वत:च्या मर्यादा उल्लंघू शकतो.

माणसाच्या उत्क्रांतीच्या प्रवासाचा अंतिम टप्पा आणि विकासवृक्षाला आलेले खरे फळ म्हणजे उच्च नैतिक मुल्ये जपणारी आणि स्वातंत्र्य आणि जबाबदारी यांच्या दुपेडी वीणेतून घडलेली नीतिमान समाजरचना…”

१९३१ मध्ये नाईटहूड, १९५४ मध्ये भारतरत्न, १९६३ मध्ये ‘ब्रिटीश रॉयल ऑरर्ड ऑफ मेरीट’चे सन्मानिय मानद सदस्यत्व अशा विविध सन्मानांनी गौरविलेल्या डॉ. सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन यांचे हे विचारधन ! गांधीजींच्या ‘रामराज्या’शी मिळत्या-जुळत्या या संकल्पनेला ते ‘ब्रह्मलोक’ संबोधित. त्यांचा आदर्श मनुष्य हा सत्वशील, अपार करुणेचा समायोजनी संतरुपी माणूस आहे जो स्वातंत्र्य आणि जबाबदारी यांची उत्तम सांगड घालून समाजरचना घडवेल; कुणी प्रकांड पंडित विद्वान अथवा सामर्थ्यशील, विजिगीषु पुरुष नव्हे. तो केवळ आपल्या स्वत:च्या उत्थानासाठी कार्यरत नाही तर संपूर्ण मानव्याच्या, सृष्टीच्या समतोल, सर्वसमावेशक आणि धारणाक्षम विकासासाठी कटिबद्ध आहे. म्हणजेच तो सर्वमुक्ती – संपूर्ण समाजाच्या उत्थानासाठी कार्यमग्न आहे. तो स्वत:च्या मर्यादा ओळखतो आणि त्यांना लांघण्याचा प्रामाणिक प्रयत्न करतो. म्हणून तो अद्वितीय आणि निरासक्त, बंधमुक्त, विमुक्त आहे.

आज डॉ. सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन यांची १३२ वी जयंती. ‘शिक्षक हे देशातील सर्वोत्तम प्रज्ञेचे आणि प्रगल्भ जाणिवांचे धनी असावेत…’ अशी धारणा असणाऱ्या भारताच्या या पहिल्या उपराष्ट्रपतींशिवाय आणखी कुणाची जयंती शिक्षक दिन म्हणून साजरी करणे यथार्थ आणि प्रसंगोचित ठरले असते…?

सर्व हाडाच्या शिक्षकांना आणि इतरांचे प्रबोधन, उत्थापन करतांना समस्तांचे प्रेरणास्थान ठरणाऱ्या साऱ्या प्रज्ञावंत, विचारवंत आणि विवेकविचारी कृतीशील मनांना कोटी कोटी शुभेच्छा…!

परंतु अतृप्त आत्म्याच्या उपभोगांना एक आयुष्य अपुरे पडू लागले…
तेव्हा ‘कुळ’ वाढविण्याच्या कल्पनेने बीज-क्षेत्र न्यायाचा(?) भोग आला…
भोगच तो, भोगूनच पार पाडावा लागणार म्हणून स्पर्धा आली, सत्ता आली…
स्पर्धेत पुढे जायचे तर इतरांना मागे टाकायला हवे आणि वर चढायचे तर,
खालच्यांच्या खांद्यावर, वेळप्रसंगी डोक्यावरही, पायाचा रेटा द्यायलाच हवा…
या सत्तालालसेतून धर्म आले, त्यातून विभाजन आणि द्वेषाचे राजकारण आले…
‘वेगळे’ असलेल्यांवर पाळत ठेवण्याचा, निर्दाळण्याचा मस्तवाल कैफ आला…
व्यवहार’ज्ञाना’ने बांधिलकी संपवली आणि व्यवहार’चातुर्या’ने माणुसकी…
‘व्यवहार’ सचोटीचा हवा म्हणून ‘विकासा’चे साखरझोपेतले स्वप्न आले…
विकास करायचा तर निधी हवा आणि निधी उभारणीसाठी व्यापार आला…
व्यापार अमिबासारखा चहूबाजूंनी अडवातिडवा पसरला, सर्वव्यापी झाला…

BODHI…!

A seed is sown.
Its roots penetrate the earth.
It receives water from the earth and nutrients from within.
Eventually it sprouts and breaks the earth to announce its presence.
The stem develops into a trunk that grows branches all around.
The branches have leaves and a rich foliage is developed to form a Tree.
Buds start to show-up at the ends of the green leaves and these buddings wait to become flowers.
Eventually Flowers blossom and attract variety of insects and bees that would facilitate pollination.
Flowers also bear fruits and the nutritious fruits have multiple seeds, each having a potential to become a tree.
Fruits, when ripe, are either fall down from the tree top on the earth or eaten by the living beings.
Seeds from the fruit get sown in the earth and the journey restarts as one cycle is complete and a new one begins…

Nothing is permanent in the world, everything transits from one form to other and therefore IMPERMANENCE is the virtue of LIFE!

At the same time, every moment is filled with immense POSSIBILITIES that cannot be preconceived.
Hence the ultimate wisdom lies in a Mindful Life lived from Moment-to-Moment by exploring the potential possibilities and accepting the impermanence of Life as the very nature of the creation!

त्रिसूत्री

सत्य – स्वयंशिस्त – संयम

सत्य – अर्धसत्य नव्हे, साखरेत घोळलेलं सत्य नव्हे आणि सत्योत्तर सत्य (Post-Truth) तर मुळीच नव्हे. उन्हाने तापलेल्या जमिनीवर पावसाचा पहिला थेंब पडताच जो मृद्गंध सुटतो त्याच्या ताजेपणाइतके आल्हाददायक सत्य. रोज सकाळी जो प्राजक्त फुलतो त्याच्या फुलण्याइतके टवटवीत सत्य. रानांत जो वारा वाहतो त्याच्या वाहण्याइतके बंधमुक्त सत्य. पक्षांना कूजन करायला लावणाऱ्या ऋतूबदलाइतके रोमांचित सत्य. बाळाच्या निरागस हास्याइतके लोभसवाणे सत्य. सूर्याच्या तेजाइतके झगझगीत सत्य !

सत्य कमी-अधिक होऊ शकत नाही, सत्याची तोड-जोड होऊ शकत नाही आणि सत्याला कठोर किंवा सौम्य करता येत नाही कारण मग ते सत्य उरत नाही. आणि जे सत्य नाही ते असत्यच… त्यात टक्केवारी नसते. मी ९९% प्रामाणिक असल्याने ९९.९९% सत्य सांगितले, असे नसते. मी एकतर प्रामाणिक असतो किंवा दांभिक, तिसरी अवस्थाच असू शकत नाही आणि ती जर मी प्रयत्नपूर्वक तयार केली तर त्यामुळे प्रचलित होणाऱ्या समग्र समाजव्यवस्थेला आणि सर्वंकष परिणामांना ‘मी’च जबाबदार ठरतो. 

‘नरो वा कुंजरोवा…’ असे सोईस्कर संदिग्ध ‘सत्य’ बोलून ‘धर्म’ राखता येत नाही तर ‘बाप दाखव नाहीतर श्राद्ध कर…’ अशा बाणेदारपणे ‘दुधका दुध और पानीका पानी’ करण्याची नीरक्षीर वृत्ती बाळगली तरच इतरांचा अधिक्षेप आणि न्याय-निवाडा करण्याचा नैतिक अधिकार मिळवता येतो. अर्थात शतप्रतिशत सत्य जाणून घेणे आणि त्यातीलही समर्पक तेवढेच सांगणे यासाठी जाणीवपूर्वक प्रयत्न तर करावे लागतातच पण अगदी लहानपणापासून निरोगी नितीमत्तेचे बाळकडू मिळून नैतिक धैर्याची जोपासना व्हावी लागते. प्रसंगी समस्तांचा रोषही पत्करावा लागतो कारण वेगळी वाट निवडून मार्ग खडतर करून घेण्यापेक्षा ‘श्रावणी’ खाणे केव्हाही सोपे असल्याने ‘सारेच करतात…’ची झापडं लावणं साऱ्यांनाच सोईस्कर ठरते.

सूर्यप्रकाशाच्या मार्गात अडथळा निर्माण झाला की ग्रहण अटळ, तद्वतच सत्याशी आपलाप केल्यास असत्य आणि त्यायोगे होणारी फसवणूक अटळ. ग्रहण हे अशुभसूचक, सुतकी मानण्याचे जसे ‘शास्त्र’ आहे तसेच असत्य हे अनिष्ट, अभद्र आणि विध्वंसक म्हणून त्याज्य मानावे असे मूळ नीतीशास्त्र सांगते !    

स्वयंशिस्त – सत्याइतकेच महत्वाचे दुसरे सूत्र – केवळ शिस्त नव्हे, स्वयंशिस्त ! याचे कारण शिस्त ही कुणीतरी लावावी आणि इतरांनी पाळावी असे गृहीतक असते. बऱ्याचदा शिस्त लावणारा स्वत:ला सवलत देतांना दिसतो तर ती पाळण्याची सक्ती असणारे शिस्त लावणाऱ्याचा आदर बाळगण्याऐवजी तिरस्कार करतांना आढळतात. यामुळे शिस्तीचा मूळ उद्देश तर सफल होत नाहीच पण शिस्त लावणारा त्यायोगे इतरांचे आपल्याला हितकर असे अनुकूलन (Conditioning) करण्याचा प्रयत्न करतो. कुठल्याही प्रकारचे कौतुक किंवा इनाम मिळण्याची सुतराम शक्यता नसतांनाही वैयक्तिक जीवनात, स्वत:सह इतरांना दिलेला शब्द, वेळ पाळणे, सार्वजनिक जीवनात नियमांचे आणि सामाजिक जबाबदारीचे पालन करणे आणि आपल्यामुळे कुणालाही कुठल्याही प्रकारची असुविधा किंवा त्रास होणार नाही याची काळजी घेणे, हे स्वयंशिस्तीचे काही अत्यंत प्राथमिक मापदंड सांगता येतील.

Initiative is doing the right things without being told… अर्थात, ‘कुणाच्याही निर्देशांची वाट न पाहता सुयोग्य, समुचित गोष्टी करणे म्हणजे पुढाकार…’ पुढाकाराची ही सटीक व समर्पक व्याख्या स्वयंशिस्तीलाही तंतोतंत लागू पडते. कुणीही बघत नसतांना तुम्ही कसे वागता, कुठल्याच प्रकारे परतफेडीची काहीही शक्यता नसतांना तुम्ही कुणा अपरिचित, अनोळखी गरजवंतासाठी काय करता आणि कुणालाही काही उत्तरदायित्व नसतांनाही तुम्ही ज्या गोष्टी करणे स्वाभाविकपणे अपेक्षित आहे त्या कशा करता, यावरून तुमच्या स्वयंशिस्तीची प्रतवारी जोखता येते. 

तिसरे आणि सर्वात महत्वाचे सूत्र संयम – अर्थात विकार, वासना आणि व्यय यावर विवेकाचा पहारा ! विकारातून वासना उपजते आणि वासना शमविण्यासाठी व्यय होतो, ज्याच्या प्रयोजनासाठी तेवढ्याच किंबहुना अधिकच मात्रेत आय अर्थात अर्थप्राप्तीची येन-केन-प्रकारेण सोय करावी लागते ज्यातून अधिकच विकार उत्पन्न होतात.. असे हे दुष्टचक्र आहे.

यातून मुक्ती मिळविण्याचा एकमेव खात्रीशीर मार्ग म्हणजे विवेकाची कास धरणे. विवेक (Conscience) बाळगण्याचा आणि जोपासण्याचा एक अत्यंत सोपा आणि कुणालाही सहजसाध्य उपाय म्हणजे मनात आलेल्या कुठल्याही विचाराचा कार्यकारणभाव जाणून कृती करणे आणि कृतीपूर्वी केवळ दोन प्रश्नांचे उत्तर तपासणे – ‘हे करणे खरोखरच आवश्यक, पर्याप्त आहे का ?’ आणि ‘त्यासाठी नेमकी किती किंमत मोजावी लागेल किंवा त्याचे दूरगामी परिणाम काय होतील ?’ एवढा साधा नियम जरी नित्यनेमाने पाळला तरी विवेकाचे किमान उपयोजन केल्यासारखे होईल… हेही नसे थोडके !

आजच्या जगातील राजकीय, आर्थिक, सामाजिक तथा शैक्षणिक क्षेत्रातील आपापल्या अवकाशाचे नेतृत्व करणाऱ्या आणि त्यायोगे एका समग्र समाज परिवर्तनाचे अध्वर्यू (protagonist) ठरू शकणाऱ्या, ८०% लोकसंख्येला प्रभावीत करणाऱ्या सधन, सक्षम आणि स्वतंत्र अशा २०% निर्णयक्षम लोकांपैकी केवळ ५०% समाजधुरीणांनी या त्रिसूत्रीचे काटेकोर पालन केले तर आज फारसे आदर्श (utopian?) नसणारे समाजाचे चित्र बदलण्यास, अधिक मानवी आणि सकारात्मक होण्यास एका पिढीचा अवकाश पुरावा…

जाता जाता – मार्केटिंग मॅनेजमेंटच्या थिअरीमध्ये मार्केटिंग रणनीती म्हणून USP अर्थात युनिक सेलिंग प्रपोजीशन (विक्री वैशिष्ट्य) याचा खूपच महत्व दिलेले आहे. सत्य-स्वयंशिस्त-संयम या त्रिसूत्रीचे इंग्रजीकरण करायचे झाल्यास Unadulterated-Truth, Self-Discipline and Patience म्हणजेच  USP असे होते हा निव्वळ योगायोग की यात काही Pointer अर्थात सूचक संकेत आहे…?

सुरक्षित रंगोत्सवाच्या मन:पूर्वक शुभेच्छा…!

मेंढपाळ आपल्या रोजच्या वाटेने आपली मेंढरं चारण्यास नेत होता तेवढ्यात एक आलिशान मोटार करकचून ब्रेक लावत त्याचा मार्ग अडवीत उभी झाली. मोटारीचे दार उघडून सुटा-बुटातलं एक नखशिखांत शहरी ध्यान उतरलं आणि मेंढपाळाला खीजवीत म्हणालं, ‘मी आत्ता इथे उभ्या उभ्या तुझ्याकडील मेंढरांची संख्या सांगितली तर त्यातील एक मेंढरू मला बक्षीस देशील…?’

अभ्यागताच्या आत्मविश्वासाचं कौतुक वाटल्याने आणि तो काय करतो याचं कुतूहल असल्याने मेंढपाळ म्हणाला, ‘अवश्य! तू जर खरोखरच बरोबर आकडा सांगितलास तर तू तुला यातलं हवं ते घेऊ शकतोस!’ मेंढपाळाचे उत्तर ऐकताच शहरी बाबूने आपला लॅपटॉप उघडला, काही सेटिंग्ज करून काही प्रोसेसेस रन केल्या आणि मोठ्या उत्साहात जाहीर केले, ‘मित्रा, तुझ्याकडे नेमके १,३२४ प्राणी आहेत!’

त्याच्या या करामतीने प्रभावित झालेला मेंढपाळ म्हणाला, ‘अगदी बरोब्बर, तू जिंकलास, हो पुढे आणि घे तुझं बक्षीस स्वत:च्या हाताने!’ आपल्या कर्तुत्वावर खूष होत सूट पुढे झेपावला आणि त्याने एक प्राणी आपल्या ताब्यात घेतला.

आता पाळी मेंढपाळाची होती, तो म्हणाला, ‘साहेबा, तुझ्या करामतीची प्रचीती तर आली, आता माझी पाळी. मी माझी सारी मेंढरं पणाला लावून जर तुझा पोटापाण्याचा उद्योग ओळखला तर तुझी मोटार मला देशील?’

‘का नाही?’ शहरी ध्यानाला या गावंढळ माणसाशी खेळाची आता गम्मत वाटू लागली होती.

क्षणाचाही विलंब न लावता मेंढपाळ म्हणाला, ‘तू कन्सलटंट आहेस, फी घेऊन लोकांना सल्ला देतोस!’

‘अरेच्चा! तुला कसे समजले?’ अचंबित होत कन्सलटंट म्हणाला.

‘सोपं आहे!’ मेंढपाळ सांगू लागला, ‘एक तर तुला कुणीही न बोलवता तू माझ्या वाटेत कुठूनसा टपकलास. तू सूट-बूट घालून महागड्या मोटारीतून आलास. मी तुला काहीही विचारले नसतांना तू मला असे काही देण्याची ऑफर दिलीस जे मला मुळी नकोच होते. आणि एवढे सारे होऊनही, तुला माझ्या कामाबद्दल काहीही माहित नाही… माझी मेंढरं मला राहू दे, तुझी गाडी तुला राहू दे फक्त मगाशी बक्षीस म्हणून माझा राखणीचा कुत्रा उचललास तेवढा परत कर!’

हा निव्वळ, निखालस आणि निरागस विनोद असून त्यामागे कुणालाही दुखविण्याचा किंवा हेटाळणी करण्याचा हेतू नाही. शिवाय याचा कुठल्याही सांप्रत स्थानिक, राष्ट्रीय, जागतिक घडामोडींशी संबंध नाही, तेव्हां उगाच ‘मेंढपाळ हे शेतकऱ्यासाठी, कन्सल्टंट हे भांडवलवाद्यांसाठी (किंवा राजकारण्यांसाठी!) आणि मेंढरं, कुत्रा हे… योजलेले रूपक आहे’ वगैरे जावईशोध लावून लेखकाच्या मनातही नसलेले योगायोग जुळवून आणू नये ही नम्र विनंती!

औद्धत्य…!

इसापनीती, जातककथा यातील नीतीकथा असोत की बोधकथा, सोन्याचे अंडी देणारी कोंबडी कापून तिच्या पोटातील सारी सोन्याची अंडी एकदम मिळविण्याच्या लोभात कोंबडी गमाविणे किंवा सुवर्णमुद्रांचे घबाड मिळविण्याच्या मोहात, रोज वारूळाबाहेर येऊन एक सुवर्णमुद्रा देणाऱ्या नागाचे वारूळ फोडल्यावर संतप्त नागाचा दंश होणे, यातून माणसाची लोभी वृत्ती त्याचा घात करू शकते ही अत्यंत बाळबोध शिकवण खरतर बाळपणीच मिळणे गृहीत होते. तथापि, वैज्ञानिक दृष्टीकोनाच्या अविवेकी विकासामुळे, जगातली कुठलीही कोंबडी सोन्याची अंडी देत नाही आणि कुठल्याच वारुळातील नाग सुवर्णमुद्रा देत नाही, हे ‘ज्ञान’ झाल्याने अशा बोधकथातील तथ्य मिथ्या ठरते आणि त्यातील तत्व देखील दंतकथा बनून राहते. शिवाय, लहानपणी शाळेमध्ये शिकलेल्या मूल्यविचारांच्या गोष्टी प्रत्यक्ष आयुष्यात आचरणात आणल्यास सामाजिक प्रतिष्ठेच्या दृष्टीने आपले अवमूल्यन होते एवढी साधी व्यावहारिक समज शाळेबाहेर पडून कॉलेजची पायरी चढल्याक्षणी येते. तेव्हा, ‘अशा नीतीकथा या विशिष्ट प्रसंगी, आपल्याला प्रमुख पाहुणे म्हणून, विशेषत: शाळेमध्ये, बोलविले असता प्रबोधनपर भाषण देण्याचा प्रसंग आलाच तर लक्षात असू द्याव्या एवढाच त्यांचे उपयोजन’ हे सूज्ञ जाणून असता. अशी संतुलित आणि व्यवहार्य भूमिका असली की विवेक-तारतम्य वैगरेंचा उपद्रव होत नाही आणि विचारांपेक्षा विकार सहज, सुलभ आणि सुकर भासल्याने जवळचे वाटू लागतात.

अपरिहार्यता, संधी आणि साधने यांचा अनुक्रमे विकास होत गेला तशी निकड, हौस आणि हाव यांच्यातील सीमारेषा धूसर होत गेली. सृष्टीतील इतर सजीवांप्रमाणे आदिम प्रेरणांवर जगणारा मनुष्यप्राणी दोन पायांवर उभा राहून जसजसा प्रगत होत गेला तसतसे त्याच्या अपेक्षांना धुमारे फुटू लागले. ‘विकसित’ माणसाला रोज नव्या सुखाची स्वप्ने पडू लागली आणि आपले आयुष्य अधिकाधिक सुखासीन करण्याचा त्याने चंगच बांधला. आपल्या सुरक्षिततेसाठी आणि सोयीसाठी त्याने ‘समाज’ नावाची व्यवस्था उभी केली खरी पण तिची मूल्यव्यवस्था, नीतीनियम तयार करतांना, आपल्या सोयीने ती बदलता यावी म्हणून भविष्यवेधी रचना करतांनाच, तिच्यावरील आपली मिरासदारी शाबित रहावी म्हणून तिला रूढी-परंपरांच्या चौकटीतही बांधून ठेवले. रचनेतच अशी सरमिसळ झाल्याने या व्यवस्थेतील अंतर्विरोध कालौघात विकोपाला जाऊन नीतीमूल्यांची जागा व्यावहारिक मूल्यांनी घेतली आणि व्यवस्थेमधला कार्यकारणभाव  नामशेष होऊन विकासाच्या नावाखाली माणसाची अनाठायी हाव तेवढी चिरंतन ठरली. ही हाव जोपर्यंत परस्परातील असूया, इर्षा, स्पर्धा आणि हेवेदावे यांच्यापर्यंत मर्यादित होती तोपर्यंत तिची फारशी दखल घेण्याची गरज नव्हती कारण त्यातून होणाऱ्या निष्पन्नाची जबाबदारी ही जशी संबंधीत ‘स्पर्धकां’वर होती तशीच त्याचे परिणाम देखील सर्वस्पर्शी किंवा दूरगामी नव्हते.

परंतु माणसाचा हा भस्म्या रोग जेव्हा इतर सजीवांच्या जीवावर उठून सृष्टीच्या अनाहत चक्राची मुळ पोखरू लागला तेव्हा सृष्टीला देखील या औद्धत्याची दखल घेणे भाग पडले. विज्ञान आणि तंत्रज्ञानाच्या जोरावर आपण काहीही नष्ट / निर्माण करू शकू अशा भ्रमात बेलगाम झालेल्या माणसाला त्याचीच निर्मिती असलेले प्लास्टिक नष्ट होऊ शकत नाही आणि पाणी तयार करता येत नाही याचा बोध झाल्यावरच खरतर अक्कल यायला हरकत नव्हती पण दंभाने अंध झालेल्या प्राण्याकडून विवेकाची अपेक्षा करणे म्हणजे राजकारण्यांकडून समाजकारणाची, चॅनलीय चर्चेतील विद्वानांकडून विद्वत्तेची किंवा भांडवलवाद्यांकडून सर्वसमावेशकतेची अपेक्षा करण्याइतके वेडगळपणाचे (की बाळबोधपणाचे?) लक्षण! आज, एका अतिसूक्ष्म विषाणूच्या निमित्ताने माणसाची उडालेली भंबेरी या गोष्टीची पुरेशी निदर्शक आहे की स्वत:ला सर्वज्ञ आणि सर्वशक्तिमान समजणाऱ्या माणसाला, आपल्यासह सर्व चराचराला धारण करणाऱ्या सृष्टीबद्दल आणि तिच्या गतीविधींबद्दल किंचितही जाण नाही, भान तर मुळीच नाही.

अवकाळी पाऊस, असह्य थंडी, भयंकर उकाडा अशा टोकाच्या हवामानातून वातावरणातील बदल हा निसर्गाने माणसाला दिलेला पहिला धोक्याचा इशारा आहे, तो आवश्यक त्या गंभीरपणे न घेण्याची शहामृगी वृत्ती मनुष्य जमातीच्या मुळाशी आल्याशिवाय राहणार नाही. एकांगी, अनाठायी, बेबंद आणि आंधळ्या विकासाच्या मार्गाने विनाशाच्या गर्तेत कोसळण्याच्या दिशेने अत्यंत वेगाने धावणाऱ्या माणसाने या विपरीत बुद्धीला वेळीच लगाम घातला नाही तर मनुष्य प्रजाती ही येऊ घातलेल्या सिक्स्थ मास एक्सटिंक्शन अर्थात सहाव्या महाप्रजाती विलोपाच्या अग्रस्थानी असल्यास नवल नाही…

तथाऽपि तृष्णा रघुनन्दनस्य विनाशकाले विपरीतबुद्धिः॥

सिग्नल…?

मायक्रोसॉफ्ट कंपनीत एका माणसाने सफाई कर्मचाऱ्याच्या पदासाठी अर्ज केला. मुलाखतीचे बोलवणे येऊन त्याची प्रात्यक्षिक चाचणी झाली आणि त्याने आपले काम अतिशय सफाईने केल्याने त्याची ताबडतोब निवड झाली. नेमणूक अधिकारी त्याला म्हणाला, ‘तुझा इमेल आयडी दे म्हणजे पुढच्या औपचारिकता तुला मेलने कळवतो.’

उमेदवार म्हणाला, ‘माझ्याकडे इमेल आयडी नाही आणि मला ते वापरता देखील येत नाही!’

मायक्रोसॉफ्ट नेमणूक अधिकारी अवाक होत म्हणाला, ‘अरेच्चा, असेही लोक असतात? हे बघ, ज्यांच्याकडे स्वत:चा इमेल आयडी नाही अशी माणसे आमच्या दृष्टीने अस्तित्वातच नसतात, तेव्हा आम्ही तुला रुजू करून घेऊ शकत नाही, माफ कर!’

मायक्रोसॉफ्टच्या इमारतीतून निराशेने बाहेर पडलेल्या उमेदवाराने खिशातली शेवटची दहाची नोट काढली आणि काय करावे अशा विचारात असतांना त्याला समोरच्या दुकानात लालजर्द आणि ताजे टवटवीत टोमॅटो दिसले, त्याने त्या पैशांचे टोमॅटो विकत घेतले आणि दारोदार जाऊन विकले तर त्याला जवळपास १००% फायदा झाला. यामुळे खूपच उत्साहित होऊन त्याने दुसऱ्या दिवशी आणखी जास्त टोमॅटो घेऊन विकायचे ठरवले आणि सकाळी लवकर उठून तो कामाला लागला आणि रात्री उशिरापर्यत त्याने सर्व टोमॅटो विकले तर त्याची उलाढाल १० वरून ५० पर्यंत गेली.

अनुभव आणि भांडवल वाढत गेले तसे त्याने हळूहळू आधी हातगाडी, मग टेम्पो, काही काळाने स्वत:चा मालवाहू कंटेनर ट्रक अशी प्रगती करत साधारण २० वर्षांच्या काळात त्या शहरातला एक आघाडीचा टोमॅटोचा व्यापारी म्हणून नाव आणि प्रतिष्ठा कमवली आणि स्वत:च्या कंटेनर्सची आणि गोदामांची भली मोठ्ठी साखळी उभी केली. आता आपला व्यवसाय देशाबाहेर देखील नेऊन जगभरातील बाजारात आपला माल निर्यात करावा म्हणून त्याने सिद्धता केली. तथापि या सर्व व्यापाची आणि आपल्या कुटुंबियांची सुरक्षितता म्हणून त्याने सगळ्याचा विमा काढायचा ठरवले आणि एका विमा प्रतिनिधीस चर्चेस बोलावले.

सर्व विमा योजनांची तपशीलवार माहिती घेतल्यानंतर त्यातील काही निश्चित करून त्याने विमा प्रतिनिधीला सोपस्कार पार पाडायला सांगितले तेव्हा प्रतिनिधी म्हणाला, ‘सर, आपला इमेल आयडी द्या, मी आवश्यक ती सर्व कागदपत्रे आपल्याला मेल करतो.’ यावर व्यापारी म्हणाला, ‘मित्रा, माझ्याकडे इमेल आयडी नाही.’ प्रतिनिधी आश्चर्याने म्हणाला, ‘सर, इमेल आयडी नसतांना आपण एवढे काही करू शकलात, विचार करा वीस वर्षांपूर्वीच तुम्ही इमेल आयडी काढला असता तर आज कुठे असता…?’

डोळ्यातले मिष्कील भाव न लपवता व्यापारी म्हणाला, ‘तर आज मी मायक्रोसॉफ्टमध्ये सफाई कर्मचारी असतो…!’

गेली सुमारे २० वर्षे ह्युमन रिसोर्स (नव्हे, राईट्स!) आणि मॅनेजमेंट (नव्हे, डेव्हलपमेंट!) अर्थात मानव संसाधन (केवळ साधन नव्हे!) क्षेत्राशी या ना त्या प्रकारे निगडीत असल्याने या विषयातील अनेक खाचाखोचा, खाचखळगे आणि चांगल्या(?)वाईट पद्धती (प्रॅक्टिसेस, यू नो!) यांचे जेवढे जवळून (खरेतर आतून-बाहेरून म्हणणे जास्त सयुक्तिक ठरावे!) निरीक्षण-परीक्षण-विश्लेषण करता आले तेवढ्याच किंबहुना त्याहून कितीतरी अधिक प्रमाणात या क्षेत्रातील विषयांवरचे विनोद, किस्से ऐकण्यात आणि पहाण्यात(ही) आले! नवीन सहस्त्रकाच्या आसपास बोकाळलेला (व्हायरल झालेला, हो!) असाच हा एक किस्सा…

हा किस्सा किंवा विनोद असण्याची कारणे तीन –
१. उद्योजकता रक्तात असलेला माणूस नोकरीच्या मुलाखतीसाठी जाणार नाही, सफाई कर्मचाऱ्याच्या तर नाहीच!
२. व्यवसायात वाढ होत असतांना अनेक हातांची आणि तज्ञांची मदत लागते, ते नियुक्त करता येतात.
३. मायक्रोसॉफ्ट इमेल आयडी नाही म्हणून कुणालाही काहीही नाकारणार नाही उलट अत्यंत तत्परतेने नवीन आयडी काढून देण्यास मदत करेल कारण त्यामुळे कर्मचारी तर मिळेलच शिवाय एक ग्राहकही… विन-विन सिच्युएशन!

आज हा आठवण्याचे कारण, पुन्हा एकदा… कोव्हीड आणि त्याचे मूलगामी आणि दूरगामी परिणाम. केवळ इंटरनेट आणि इमेल यांच्या मदतीनेच वर्क फ्रॉम होम शक्य झाले हे सत्य असले तरी त्या प्रकारच्या कामाचा उबग येऊन (की त्यातले व्यर्थता जाणवून?) अनेकांनी परखड आत्मपरीक्षण करून बॅक टू बेसिक्स असा (टोमॅटो विकण्याचा?) मार्ग निवडला हे त्याहून मोठे साक्षात्कारी सत्य ठरले हे नाकारून चालणार नाही. नोकरीसाठी इच्छुक उमेदवारांच्या गेल्या काही काळात, विशेषत: गेल्या काही महिन्यात, दिवसांत मी घेतलेल्या मुलाखती जेवढ्या अंतर्मुख करून गेल्या तेवढ्या माझ्या सम्पूर्ण कार्यकाळात घडल्याचे मला स्मरत नाही. हे सामाजिक स्थित्यंतर तर नक्कीच पण मला अपेक्षित तसेच समूळ परिवर्तन की… ते आत्ताच नक्की सांगता येणार नाही. कारण…

ब्रेक्झीटचे कवित्व अजून संपलेले नसतांना, शेतकऱ्यांच्या आंदोलनाचा कुठलाही समन्वयी तोडगा दृष्टीपथात नसतांना, कोव्हीडसाठी लशीकरण सुरु झाले असले तरी त्यातील संदिग्धता चिंतनीय असतांना, खुद्द लोकशाहीच्या धुरिणांसह, लोकशाहीच्या चौथ्या स्तंभाची आणि सामाजिक न्यायाची जबाबदारी असणाऱ्यांवर अत्यंत गंभीर आरोप होत असतांना, बुद्धिवादी साहित्यिक आणि परंपराप्रेमी यांच्यातील वादाची जखम ताजी असतांना आणि दांभिक विरक्तीच्या सात गाद्यांच्या तळाशी प्रच्छन्न आसक्तीचा मोती आपली बोच जाणवून देत असतांना, या साऱ्या जागतिक (आणि आगतिक?) घडामोडींना पुरून उरलेला एकच प्रश्न अवकाश व्यापून राहिलेला दिसतो…

Virtue…!

Force to reckon with!

“Give me hundred truly dedicated people and I will change the face of this country…” This is a quote generally attributed to Swami Vivekananda. Whether he said it or not, he definitely had the vision to change the things for better and bring that change through the people who always are instrumental in any type of change – people who have a vision, people who are passionate and people who are committed. Remembering Swami Vivekananda on his Birth Anniversary today, let us take his vision ahead and expand it even more…

If we can have Thousand truly inspired Teachers*, we can change the face of Humanity and this World! Whatever is wrong with the present world is nothing but the reflection of compromised values and to correct that, all we need is a bunch of thoughtful, innovative, resourceful and righteous Teachers who will not just show the path but walk along it by assuming the role of society’s Conscious Keepers. Imbibing virtuous values is only half the part of Holistic Development, keeping them in check at every instance of life is the other equally important part!

It seems to have become a norm that Discipline, Human Values and, more importantly, Civic Science (or sense, to be precise!) is the part of School Curriculum and it is absolutely unnecessary outside the school, whereas it is exactly opposite! Indiscipline, lack of values and poor knowledge of civic science or sense might amount to ignorance (or low score) and can be corrected easily with little effort in school. More importantly it would do little harm to the society while in school than it does when established by adults as the ‘way of life’ in the (and for the?) modern living!

If we can see to it that the entire society tries to become more virtuous than pretentious, it would be a true tribute to the Legend who had a vision to see beyond centuries…!

विकास…!

सुमारे ६ वर्षांपूर्वी उद्योगांचे सामाजिक दायित्व [Corporate Social Responsibility] हा विषय अभ्यासत असतांना, मानसशास्त्र विषयाच्या एका वर्गात आम्हाला जाणिवांचे संशोधन आणि संज्ञान-विकसन [Cognizance Development] या अंतर्गत एक कृती-कार्यक्रम [Class Activity] दिली होती. यात आम्हाला विविध कृष्णधवल तथा रंगीत छायाचित्रे देण्यात आली आणि त्यातून आम्हाला एक विकास [Development] दर्शविणारे आणि दुसरे ज्यातून विकासाला असणारी आव्हाने [Challenges to Development] प्रतीत होतील अशी दोन प्रातिनिधिक चित्रे निवडण्यास सांगण्यात आली आणि प्रत्येकाने आपापल्या ज्ञान-भान-जाण-जाणिवांना अनुसरून निवड केली.

मी निवडलेली दोन चित्रे अनुक्रमे अशी होती – विकास प्रतीत करणारे मी निवडलेले कृष्णधवल चित्र होते – करड्या अवकाशाच्या पार्श्वभूमीवर आपल्याच लयीत संथपणे विहार करणारा पांढराशुभ्र पक्षी आणि विकासाला आव्हान दर्शविणारे माझे रंगीत चित्र होते – यात्रेतला माणसांनी खचाखच भरलेला आणि वेगाने गरगरणारा महाकाय आकाशपाळणा! अर्थातच आमच्या निवडीमागचा आमचा विचार स्पष्ट करण्याचे बंधन आम्हाला होते आणि माझे विवेचन असे होते –

ज्या अवकाशामध्ये प्रत्येक जीव म्हणजे कुठलाही सजीव हा कुठल्याही भीती, दबाव, उपचार तथा गतानुगतिक रूढीग्रस्ततेपासून मुक्त आणि इतर कुणाशीही तुलना किंवा स्पर्धा न करता, संपूर्ण जाणीवेने आपल्या ‘स्वयम्’शी प्रामाणिक राहून आपल्याच विशिष्ट शैलीत स्वच्छंद पण जबाबदार विहार करू शकेल असा कुठलाही अवकाश माझ्या दृष्टीने ‘विकसित’ [Developed] म्हणता येईल आणि तो तसा होण्यास आणि राहण्यास जी रचना अथवा जे प्रारूप [Social Structure] कारणीभूत ठरेल आणि त्या अवकाशाची धारणा करेल तोच विकास [Development]! तपशीलातील बारकाव्यामध्ये, करडी पार्श्वभूमी ही कायमच कुठल्यातरी अनिष्ट, अनीतीचे मळभ भरून राहीलेल्या आभाळाच्या परिस्थितीचे, सभोवतालचे सूचन होते तर पांढराशुभ्र पक्षी हा चिखलात उगविणाऱ्या कमळाचे, निष्कलंक अलांच्छित चारित्र्याचे प्रतिमान म्हणून निवडले होते.

तर यात्रेतील महाकाय, स्वत:च्या अक्षाभोवती भिरभिरणाऱ्या आकाशपाळण्याचे रंगीत चित्र हे आजच्या बहुरंगी, बहुढंगी, चंगळवादी आणि क्षणिक सुखाच्या नादात सतत भिरभिरत राहणाऱ्या अत्याधुनिक जीवनशैलीचे प्रतिबिंब होते. अशा जीवनशैलीच्या मोहात गुंतून पडल्याने, स्वत:भोवती जाळे विणून त्यातच अडकून पडणाऱ्या कोळ्याचे जिणे आपण जगतो आहोत याचेही भान नसल्याने, धावण्यातच कैफ शोधण्याच्या अट्टाहासापायी आपण केवळ गरगर फिरतोय पोहचत कुठेच नाही हे मुळात समजतच नाही आणि समजले तरी उमजायला जो अक्षम्य उशीर होतो – तो जाणीवेचा अभाव, प्रच्छन्न अनास्था हेच खऱ्या, सर्वसमावेशक आणि धारणाक्षम (शाश्वत नव्हे; इंग्रजी शब्दांचे मराठीकरण करतांना भाषेचा तर राहू दे साधा अर्थाचा देखील विवेक न बाळगल्याने ‘Sustainable’ चे मराठीकरण ‘शाश्वत’ होते जे फारतर ‘Eternal’ चे ‘मुक्त भाषांतर’ असू शकते, असो!) विकासाला आव्हानं असू शकते.

हा स्वत:च्या नादात, स्वत:च्या वेगात आणि स्वत:च्याच मस्तीत स्वत:भोवतीच गोलगोल फिरणारा, स्वमग्नतेचा प्रतिक असलेला पाळणा क्षणभरसुद्धा थांबविणे महाकठीण तेथे तो उलटा फिरविणे म्हणजे तर काळाचे चक्र मागे फिरविण्याइतके वेडगळपणाचे – दिवास्वप्न किंवा कविकल्पना का म्हणानात! हे माणसानेच माणसाच्या भ्रामक विकासाच्या कल्पनांनी खऱ्या, समग्र विकासापुढे उभे केलेले आव्हान… जे फक्त माणसाच्या संवेदना जाग्या आणि जाणीवा समृद्ध झाल्याशिवाय स्वीकारताही येणार नाही, आधुनिक उपायांनी ते निर्दाळणे तर केवळ अतर्क्य आणि अशक्य!

माझ्या या ‘निरुपणा’शी सहमत होणे तेव्हा देखील तेथील उपस्थितांपैकी कुणालाही अर्थातच जड गेले असणार आणि असल्या कविकल्पनांशी तादाम्य पावण्याइतका अव्यवहारी तात्विक मुर्खपणा करण्यापेक्षा त्या आकाशपाळण्याची, रोमारोमात भिनणारी आणि तनमन धुंद करून टाकणारी, ‘आजकल पांव जमींपर नहीं पडते मेरे…’ अनुभूती देणारी सैर कुणालाही अधिक प्रिय वाटली तर दोष कुणाचा…?

आज हे सारे आठविण्याचे कारण म्हणजे… करोना आणि नववर्ष! करोनाने तो पाळणा काही काळ थांबवला हे तर नक्की. बऱ्याच लोकांना या ‘निष्कर्म कर्मयोगा’च्या काळात अनेक साक्षात्कार झाले, उपरत्या झाल्या आणि हृदयाला वित्त… आपलं रक्तपुरवठा करणाऱ्या वाहिन्या संकुचित झाल्यामुळे विरक्तीचे झटकेही आले. एक वेळ अशीही आली की आता हा पाळणा खरोखरीच उलटा फिरायला लागतो की काय अशी शंका येण्याइतपत आध्यात्मिक निरासक्ती आणि संतुलित जीवनाचे महत्व याच्या पर्वतप्राय लाटा उठतांना दिसल्या पण लशीची चाहूल लागताच त्यांना भरतीच्या दुप्पट वेगाने ओहोटीही लागलेली दिसली.

नवीन वर्षाच्या निमित्ताने आणि येऊ घातलेल्या लशीच्या भरवशावर बहुतांनी गतसालावर आगपाखड करून घेतली. बऱ्याच लोकांनी Sunday सिनेमातील कथाबीजानुसार गेले वर्ष आपल्या आयुष्यात आलेच नव्हते [Zero Year] असे समजून पुढील मार्गक्रमणा करण्याचा निर्णय घेऊन अत्यंत विद्वत्ताप्रचुर संयमाचे प्रमाण दिले! तर कुणी अजूनही करोनाने दिलेल्या दणक्यातून सावरण्याचा प्रयत्न करता आहेत. काही उदासीन संत प्रभृती या, ‘ठेविले अनंते तैसेची रहावे…’ या साक्षीभावाने साऱ्याच घटनाक्रमाकडे निरिच्छ आणि ‘इदं न मम…’ धारणेने पाहता आहेत तर काही होतकरू उद्योजक ‘संधी’चे सोने करण्याच्या उद्योगात मग्न आहेत…

या सगळ्या गोंधळात, करोनाने दिलेले धडे नववर्षाच्या संकल्पांसारखे अल्पजीवी ठरू नये ही अपेक्षा ठेऊन आणि साऱ्याच करोना-योध्यांप्रती कृतज्ञता बाळगून पुन:पुन्हा एकच प्रश्न ‘मना’ला छळत राहतो… पाळणा पुन्हा वेग पकडतोय… यावेळी त्याची गतीही वाढली आणि आकाशाची सफर करण्याची माणसाची लालसाही वाढत राहिली…

Disale Sir was selected from over 12,000 applicants and nominees from approximately 140 countries; however what needs to be celebrated more than the Award itself is the Teacher’s response to it! This gem of a person has decided to share half the amount of his prize money with the other Nine finalists – the first time in the Global Teacher Prize’s six-year history that the winner has shared the prize money with other finalists – and the remaining amount will be used to start new innovative education projects and creative methods of teaching-learning for students… can you think of a better innovation?

I believe that if I share my prize money with nine teachers, I can scale up their work. They should continue their work and we can reach out and lighten the lives of many students…”

How many businesses can you remember or think of who would willingly declare that they have earned a profit beyond their projected calculations and hence would offer a handsome dividend, at least to their workforce, let alone the stakeholders? Huh…? Every now and then, don’t we see corporates with ‘Education’ as their ‘Focus Area’ trying hard to plan even their CSR spending to their own advantage – one way or other?

If we can have just 1% of the humanity with Sir Ranjitsingh Disale’s attitude, aptitude, temperament and tendency, half of the New Age Challenges would cease to exist and no CSR would be required, ever… believe me!

मायकेल जॅक्सन या अतिश्रीमंत जगप्रसिद्ध गायक-नर्तकाने, म्हातारा होण्याची कल्पना भयावह वाटत असल्याने शुद्ध प्राणवायूचा अखंडित पुरवठा व्हावा म्हणून रोज ऑक्सीजन चेंबर मध्ये झोपण्याची वंदता असली तरी त्याचे चिरतरुण राहण्याचे स्वप्न आणि अकाली मृत्यू या दोन्ही गोष्टी ढळढळीत सत्य आहेत…

ही माणसाच्या ज्ञात इतिहासातील फक्त काही उदाहरणे आहेत, अशी आणखी कितीतरी देता येतील. मुद्दा असा की सामर्थ्य, सत्ता, संपत्ती याने काही काळ थोडी भौतिक सुखे विकत घेण्याच्या भ्रमात माणूस जगतो पण आंतरिक समाधान या सगळ्या पलीकडे आहे हे समजायला त्याला सहसा खूप ऊशीर होतो.

कळतं पण वळत नाही आणि समजतं पण उमजत नाही अशा या, बाहेर सुख-समाधान शोधण्या मागची जी अनेक कारणे आहेत त्यातील एक प्रमुख कारण म्हणजे माणसाची तुलना करण्याची मूलभूत प्रवृत्ती! समूहात राहतांना माणूस अत्यंत स्वाभाविकपणे स्वत:ची दुसऱ्याशी तुलना करू लागला आणि बरोबरीही.

तुलनात्मक निरीक्षण-परीक्षण-विश्लेषण स्वभावत: चूक म्हणता येणार नाही कारण ज्या जिज्ञासू वृत्तीमुळे मनुष्य इतर प्राण्यांपेक्षा वेगळा आणि प्रगत झाला त्याच प्रवृत्तीचे तौलनिक अभ्यास हेही एक परिमाण आहे तेव्हा तुलना ही वस्तुत: वाईट नसून तिला चिकटलेला हेतू हा माणसाच्या विकासाची दिशा ठरवीत असतो.

दुसरी प्रवृत्ती ही आदिम प्रेरणांची. इतर सर्व सजीवांप्रमाणे माणसाला देखील चार आदिम प्रेरणा या निसर्गत: मिळाल्या आहेत आणि ते देखील स्वाभाविक म्हणावे असेच आहे. तथापि या आदिम प्रेरणांवर उत्क्रांतीच्या विविध टप्प्यांवर माणसाने जे जे आधुनिक संस्करण केले त्यात सीमा ओलांडल्या गेल्या.

‘अधिकस्य अधिकम्  फलं…’ या उक्तीच्या भावार्थापेक्षा शब्दार्थ अधिक भावल्याने कायम ‘अधिक’च्या मोहात माणूस असा गुरफटत गेला की आता त्याला कुठे थांबावे हे कळण्याचा विवेकच शिल्लक न राहिल्याने तो एका अंतहीन शर्यतीचा गुलाम झाला आणि लगाम नसलेल्या घोड्यासारखा धावू लागला.

या साऱ्याचा परिणाम म्हणून आज माणसाने इतकी भौतिक प्रगती केली आहे की चमत्कार वाटाव्या अशा गोष्टी आधुनिक तंत्रज्ञानाने शक्य होतात. दुसऱ्या ग्रहाचा प्रवास करता येणे, एका ठिकाणी बसून जगातल्या कुठल्याही भागावर नियंत्रण ठेवता येणे, हव्या तेव्हा हव्या तशा वस्तु बनवता येणे, ही काही उदाहरणे…

हे सारे असले तरी यात दोन मुख्य अडचणी आहेत – आधुनिक तंत्रज्ञानाचे चमत्कार अगदी मूठभर निवडक लोकांना उपलब्ध असल्याने त्यांच्यातील आणि बहुसंख्यातील दरी आणि परिणामी सामाजिक विषमता वाढत जाते हे एक आणि दुसरे म्हणजे, एवढे सारे करूनही ‘आहे रे’ वर्गाला समाधान नाही!

हा तिढा सुटण्यासाठी एका अशा समाजाची गरज आहे ज्यात मनुष्यसमूह अनास्थेपेक्षा [Apathy] समानुभूतीला [Empathy] अग्रक्रम देईल; आपल्या प्राथमिक गरजा पूर्ण झाल्यावर, ओंजळ भरल्यावर अधिकचे उधळून मातीत सांडण्याऐवजी, ज्याच्या मूलभूत गरजाही अपुऱ्या आहेत त्याचा विचार करेल.

पण हे साधणे सहजी शक्य नाही कारण वर्षानुवर्षांच्या अनुकूलनाने [Conditioning] ‘आजची जीवनशैली, आचार-विचार, सामाजिक स्थिती ही स्वाभाविकच आहे, त्यात काहीच गैर नाही’ अशी धारणा, विशेषत: ‘आहे रे’ वर्गाची मानसिकता बघता, दृढ झालेली आढळते जी मुळापासून बदलायला लागेल.

यासाठी पुढच्या पिढीची घडण मूळापासून वेगळी असावी लागेल आणि ते साधण्यासाठी आजच्या पिढीला आपल्या धारणांमध्ये अमूलाग्र बदल करावा लागेल – विकारांची जागा विवेकाला, विखारांची जागा विचाराला आणि आत्मकेंद्रीततेची जागा आत्मभान-समाजभान-सहवेदना आणि जाणिवेला घ्यावी लागेल.

सारे काही परिवर्तनशील आहे आणि व्यक्ति, सृष्टि, समष्टि सारे एका वर्तुळाकार व्यवस्थेचे घटक आहेत, रेषीय व्यवस्थेचे नाही या दोन मूलभूत सिद्धांतांवर सर्व नियोजन बेतल्यास आणि समाजातील सर्व थरातील साऱ्या मनुष्यसमूहांचा सक्रिय सहभाग लाभल्यास, हे समूळ समग्र सामाजिक परिवर्तन शक्य आहे.

असे अपेक्षित समग्र सामाजिक परिवर्तन घडले आणि एका नव-मूल्यव्यवस्थेवर आधारित एक संतुलित, समभावी आणि संवेदनशील समाज प्रस्थापित झाला हे कसे समजावे? अशा मानवसमूहाची ओळख कशी पटावी, कस कसा लागावा याची काही लक्षणे सांगता येतील का ते देखील पाहू या.

एका समृद्ध, सुशिक्षित, सुसंस्कृत तथा संवेदनशील प्रगत मानवी समूहाची व्यवच्छेदक लक्षणे :

• समाजात सगळ्यात जास्त मान व प्रतिष्ठा शिक्षकांना लाभणे.
• शिक्षकांइतकाच मान व प्रतिष्ठा संशोधक-साहित्यिक-कलावंत-विचारवंतांना मिळणे.
• बुद्धिजीवी वर्गाइतकी समान वागणूक शेतकऱ्यांना, कष्टकऱ्यांना मिळणे, श्रमाला प्रतिष्ठा असणे.
• सर्वांना शिकण्याची समान संधी उपलब्ध असणे आणि सर्जनशीलतेला प्रोत्साहन मिळणे.
• वाहतुकीमध्ये पादचारी, दुचाकी, सार्वजनिक वाहने व खाजगी वाहने असा प्राधान्यक्रम आणि सामुदायिक व्यवहारांमध्ये मुले, स्त्रिया, ज्येष्ठ, असाधारण व्यक्ती यांच्याप्रती सौजन्य बाळगणे.
• सार्वजनिक ठिकाणी आपल्यामुळे इतर कुणालाही कसलाही त्रास होईल असे वर्तन न करणे.
• अध्यात्मिक उपक्रमांसह, आपल्या श्रद्धा, धार्मिक धारणा व तत्संबधी आचार-विचार, रीती-रिवाज, प्रथा-उपचार ही आपली खाजगी बाब असल्याने ती आपापल्या घराच्या मर्यादेत पाळणे व त्याचा जाहीर पुरस्कार न करण्याचे समस्त नागरिकांस भान असणे व सार्वजनिक ठिकाणी संयत, सुसंस्कृत वागण्याची आचारसंहिता कसोशीने पाळणे.
• जल, वायू, ध्वनि, विचार यासह साऱ्याच गोष्टींचे प्रदूषण निग्रहपूर्वक टाळणे व आपला सभोवताल सर्व प्रकारे स्वच्छ, निर्मळ आणि उल्हसित राहील यासाठी सर्वतोपरी प्रयत्न करणे. 
• समस्त नागरिकांनी आपली सर्व विहित कर्तव्ये व वैयक्तिक जबाबदाऱ्या निष्ठेने पार पाडणे तसेच आपल्या हक्क व अधिकारांबाबत सदैव जागरूक असणे.
• सर्व सामूहिक जबाबदाऱ्यांचे न्याय्य वाटप करून समाजातील सर्व घटकांना समान अधिकार व किमान सामाजिक सुरक्षा, सन्मानाने जगण्याची सामाजिक व्यवस्था असणे.
• सांस्कृतिक अधिष्ठाने आणि व्यासपीठे सर्वसमावेशक तथा लोकाभिमुख असणे तसेच त्यांना राजाश्रय असणे आणि त्यांच्या निरंतर उत्कर्षासाठी समाजाने सर्वतोपरी सक्रिय सहभाग नोंदवून सहकार्य करणे.      
• उद्योगांनी राजाश्रयाशिवाय स्वयंपूर्ण व समाजोपयोगी असणे आणि आपल्या सामाजिक जबाबदारीचे सदोदित भान राखूनच आपली व्यवसायविषयक व इतर धोरणे आखणे. 
• कुणाचीही कुठल्याही प्रकारची हानी/शोषण होणार नाही इतपतच नफा कमविण्याची उद्योग-व्यवसायांना मुभा असणे व सर्वच व्यवहारांना आर्थिक नियमनाची चौकट असणे.  
• शासन प्रशासन यांच्या धोरणात्मक नितीमध्ये आर्थिकदृष्ट्या दुर्बल व जीवनशैलीत मागास समाजघटकांस प्राधान्य व सवलतींचा आणि सर्वसामान्य माणसाच्या हिताचा विचार असणे व दैनंदिन घडामोडींमध्ये एकवाक्यता तथा प्रतिसादी तत्परता असणे.
• प्रतिक्रियेपेक्षा प्रतिसादावर, विरोधापेक्षा सहभागावर, नियंत्रणापेक्षा संस्करणावर, विकारापेक्षा विचारावर, कर्मठतेपेक्षा विवेकावर आणि द्वेषापेक्षा सहवेदनेवर भर देणारे समाजमन घडविण्यासाठी जाणीवपूर्वक प्रयत्न करणारी मूलभूत प्रेरणा व धोरण असणे.

या दृष्टीने प्रगती करण्यासाठी कुठल्याही मनुष्य समूहास खालील अग्रक्रम ठरवावे लागतील –

• निसर्गस्नेही जीवनशैली आणि सर्वसमावेशक विकासाबरोबर सात्विक संस्कार देणारी मूल्यव्यवस्था प्रस्थापित करण्यासाठी अपेक्षित आदर्श प्रारूप तयार करून प्रचलित करणे.
• शिक्षण नितीमध्ये केवळ ज्ञान-कला-कौशल्य यांचे फक्त संस्करण नव्हे तर स्वावलंबनासाठी त्यांचे सुयोग्य उपयोजन करण्याचे जीवन-शिक्षण आणि सर्वसमावेशक समाजभान असलेल्या मानवी मूल्यांचे जतन-संवर्धन होईल असे धोरणात्मक प्रयोजन असणे.
• कुठलाही समाजघटक कुठल्याही प्रकारच्या खाजगी वर्तणूक अथवा सार्वजनिक व्यवहारांमध्ये इतरांवर शिरजोर होऊन आपल्या पद-प्रतिष्ठा-सत्ता यांचा दुरुपयोग करू शकणार नाही अशी धारणाक्षम, गतिमान तथा संतुलित नियमन चौकट, सामाजिक नियंत्रण व्यवस्था असणे.

हे काम एकट्या-दुकट्याचे नाही, एका विशिष्ट समाजाचे किंवा प्रदेशाचे नाही, काही दिवस किंवा महिन्यांचे नाही तसेच फक्त समाजधुरीण, शिक्षक, नेते यांचेही नाही कारण हे समूळ, समग्र परिवर्तन सर्वसमावेशक, सर्वव्यापी आणि सर्वत्र असल्याने त्याची पालखी वाहण्यासाठी साऱ्यांचेच खांदे लागतील. इथे ‘अधिकस्य अधिकम् फलं …’ तंतोतंत लागू पडते!

उसंत…!

मजबूत शरीरयष्टीचा तो लाकुडतोड्या गावात पोहचला तेव्हा वखारीचा मालक त्याला पाहून खूष झाला. त्याने लाकूडतोड्याला अतिशय आरामदायी रहाण्याची जागा, चांगले कपडेलत्ते आणि अगदी उत्तम वेतन देऊ केले आणि उत्कृष्ट साधनांचीही कमतरता नसल्याने लाकुडतोडयाने मन लावून काम करायचे ठरवले.

Plight…!

वर्तुळ…!

पाने का सडली?
घोडा का अडला?
भाकरी का करपली?
या तीनही प्रश्नांचे उत्तर एकच आहे – ‘न फिरविल्याने!’

बोधी…!

दोन माणसे बुद्धाला भेटायला आली.

पहिला म्हणाला, ‘मी या गावात वास्तव्यास येण्याचा विचार करतोय. कसं आहे हे गाव?’
बुद्धाने विचारलं, ‘तू या पूर्वी ज्या गावात रहात होतास ते कसं होतं?’
पहिला उत्तरला, ‘भयानक! तिथली सगळी माणसं तिरस्करणीय होती. मला तिथे मुळीच आवडलं नाही.’
बुद्ध म्हणाला, ‘हे गावं देखील बरचस तसचं आहे. तू इथे रहायला यावस असं मला तरी वाटत नाही!’

संधी…!

गोष्ट जुनीच आहे… बहुदा सगळ्यांनीच ऐकलेली, पण पुन्हा एकदा.

पादत्राणे बनविणाऱ्या एका कंपनीने आपल्या दोन विक्रेत्यांना आफ्रिकेला पाठवले बाजार सर्वेक्षण करायला.

पहिला पूर्व किनाऱ्याला गेलेला म्हणाला, ‘इथे आपली उत्पादने निरुपयोगी आहेत, कुणीच पादत्राणे वापरीत नाही, आपण पादत्राणे विकणार कुणाला?’

दुसरा पश्चिम किनाऱ्याला गेलेला म्हणाला, ‘इथे आपल्याला व्यवसाय वाढवायला खूपच संधी आहे. कुणीच पादत्राणे वापरीत नसल्याने सारेच संभाव्य ग्राहक आहेत आणि स्पर्धा शून्य…!’

पहिला – ‘अरे देवा, एवढ्या सुंदर सुगंधित गुलाबांना काटे का असतात?’

दुसरा – ‘अरे वा, काय निसर्गाचा चमत्कार आहे, एवढ्या काट्यांमध्ये किती सुंदर गुलाब!’

परिस्थितीत काहीही फरक नाही… आणि वस्तुस्थितीतही!

फरक फक्त दृष्टीकोनाचा!

सांगा कसं जगायचं?

कण्हत कण्हत की गाणं म्हणत…?

लॉकडाऊन ही संधी आहे की समस्या… तुम्हीच ठरवा!

निर्वाह…!

नाव छोट्याशा गावाच्या किनाऱ्याला लागली. गावकरी उतरले, एक शहरी बाबूही उतरला. त्याने बघितले जवळच एक छोटीशी होडी पाण्यावर डोलते आहे. होडीत निवांत पहुडलेल्या गावकऱ्याने मासेमारी केली आहे आणि अतिशय चांगल्या दर्जाचे ताजे मासे जमा केले आहेत. पण ते अगदीच थोडेशे आहेत, विकून फार काही कमवता येईल असे नाही. शहरी बाबू गावकऱ्याकडे गेला, म्हणाला, ‘दादा, मासे तर खूपच चांगले मिळाले की हो!’

It’s been exactly 70 years our Constitution has been drafted on this day, how far have we come… along it or from it?

Our Constitution, regarded as a Holy Document and presumed to be the Blueprint of Modern India, came into existence exactly 70 Years ago. Don’t we need to revisit it to find some sensible insights in view of the shameless, indecent and disgusting politics happening around that has taken ‘We the People…’ for granted?

On this 70th Constitution Day let us reflect on where we came from and where are we leading to… and if that doesn’t seem to be the destination, let us resolve to change our path…!

Child-in-you…!

A child sees the world in full color… as it really is.

Adult see the world in Black and White… as profit and loss.

A child sees the earth as green… of the vegetation it produces.

Adult see the earth as green… the currency it can make as land.

कधी वेळेअभावी, कधी साधनांच्या कमतरतेमुळे, कधी आवश्यक तेवढ्या चिकाटी अभावी कधी निव्वळ अनास्थेने तर कधी निखळ आणि ओतप्रोत भरून आलेल्या कंटाळ्यामुळे ज्या अनेक छोट्या छोट्या गोष्टी करायच्या राहून जातात त्या किती जाणीवा समृद्ध करणाऱ्या आणि आत्मिक अनुभूती बरोबरच उत्कट आनंद देणाऱ्या असू शकतात याची पक्व प्रचीती म्हणजे आयुष्य! त्याशिवायच का कुणीसं म्हणून ठेवलय, ‘लाईफ इज व्हॉट हॅपन्स टू यू व्हाईल यू आर बिझी मेकिंग अदर प्लॅन्स…’ आज हे तत्वचिंतन (फिलॉसोफी, यू नो!) आठवण्याचं कारण म्हणजे अनेक वर्षांपासून, म्हणजे नितेशच्या पहिल्या भेटीपासून, ‘सावली’ला भेट देण्याचं भिजत पडलेलं घोंगड परवाच्या मुहूर्तावर पाण्यातून बाहेर पडून उन्हं बघतं झालं, तो योग!

‘वाचाल तर वाचाल’ हा संस्कारक्षम वयातला मनावर खोलवर रुजलेला संस्कार, सभोवताली त्याला पोषक वातावरण आणि ‘दिसामाजी काहीतरी ते लिहावे। प्रसंगी अखंडित वाचीत जावे।।’ हा समर्थांचा सार्थ उपदेश यामुळे आम्हाला वाचनाचे व्यसन जडले. आयुष्यातील या पहिल्याच हितकर व्यसनाला कधीही मुक्तांगणची गरज लागली नाही, उलट त्याच्या नवनवीन पातळ्यांवर अधिकाधिक मोठ्या ग्रंथभांडाराचा परिचय होत गेला, जगणे समृद्ध होत गेले. रोजची वर्तमानपत्रे, मासिके, दिवाळी अंक, कथा-कवितासंग्रह, कादंबऱ्या, चरित्रे, व्यक्तिचित्रे, प्रवासवर्णने, ललित, स्फुटं आणि छापून आलेला जवजवळ प्रत्येक शब्द वाचण्याची अनावर ओढ आम्हाला वाचक करती झाली.

कोSहम…!

आत्मशोधाची प्रक्रिया, कोSहमचे उत्तर शोधणे आपण समजतो तसे नसते, असू शकत नाही. माझ्यातला मी म्हणजे काही ‘माझी दहाची नोट…’ नव्हे जी मागच्या दिवाळीला घातलेल्या ठेवणीतल्या कुर्त्याच्या खिशात राहून जावी. बरे, मी हरवलो आहे का? तर कुठेतरी ठेवली गेली असायला व्यक्ती म्हणजे काही किल्ली नव्हे आणि ‘आपण यांना पाहिलंत का?’ मध्ये फोटो झळकावा अशा अर्थानेही आपण काही खरतर हरवलेले नसतो. खरा, माझ्या मूळच्या स्वरूपातला मी हा आत खोल असतोच. पण लहानपणापासून इतरांची माझ्याबद्दलची मतं, त्यातून मी काढलेले चुकीचे निष्कर्ष आणि माझ्या पक्क्या झालेल्या किंवा करवून दिल्या गेलेल्या धारणा, माझ्यावर घडलेले संस्कार यांच्या ढिगाऱ्याखाली मी गाडलेला असतो. त्यामुळे आत्मशोध म्हणजे खरतर हा ढिगारा उपसून काढणे आणि त्याच्याखाली, आत, खोल कुचंबलेल्या स्वत:पर्यंत पोहचणे. चुकीच्या धारणा, प्रसंगोपात संस्कार आणि अनावश्यक ज्ञान खोडून काढून मूळ मानसावर जगाने ओतलेला ढिगारा उपसून हे आठवणे की हे सर्व घडण्यापूर्वी तुम्ही कोण होतात… म्हणजे आत्मशोध!

दश-हरा…!

आज विजयादशमी, दसरा – दीपावली नामे तेजाच्या उत्सवाचे पहिले पाऊल! महिषासुरमर्दीनीने असुराचा, रामाने रावणाचा वध केला, पांडवांनी अज्ञातवास संपवून शमीच्या वृक्षावर लपवून ठेवलेली आपापली शस्त्रे पुन्हा धारण केली आणि कौत्साने आपले गुरु वरतंतू यांच्या गुरुदक्षिणेच्या अपेक्षेची पूर्तता केली अशा विविध धार्मिक, पौराणिक, अलौकिक धारणांचा संदर्भ असलेला, हिंदू मान्यतेनुसार साडेतीन शुभ मुहूर्तांपैकी, एक मुहूर्त!

Testament…!

Today as we Celebrate Bapu’s 150th Birth Anniversary, it is our moral duty as his Legal Heirs and Independent Indians to understand what he envisaged as Independent India that he described in detail in his Will, commonly known as His Testament for, he was assassinated on the eve of the day he drafted this for Congress. Although it was originally meant for then Congress, the idea of Lok Sevak Sangh, like all his other ideas, is timeless and universal for common and larger good. Any individual, body, organization, entity, good-willing group of people – activists or conscientious citizens – should understand and implement it for its integral principles as far as responsible self-governance is concerned. Way to go…

उबुंतू…!

माझी या ब्लॉगवरील ही शतकोत्तरी पहिली पोस्ट अर्थात पोस्ट क्रमांक १०१ कुठल्या विषयावर असावी याचा विचार करतांना मला जाणवले की गेले काही दिवस, मुलांच्या समग्र व्यक्तिमत्व विकासाच्या प्रस्तावित प्रकल्पांसंबंधी माझी अनेक शिक्षणतज्ञ, प्रायोगिक शिक्षणकर्मी, तर्कनिष्ठ विज्ञान शिक्षक, सूज्ञ पालक आणि समविचारी, समानधर्मी समाजचिंतक, प्रायोजक यांच्याशी जी सर्वंकष चर्चा घडते आहे त्या पार्श्वभूमीवर आणि ‘संपूर्ण समाज परिवर्तना’च्या माझ्या संकल्पनेची सुरवात, ‘शिक्षण प्रक्रियेकडे एका सर्वस्वी भिन्न परिप्रेक्ष्यातून पाहणे’ या पायरीवर पाय ठेवल्याशिवाय होऊ शकत नाही या धारणेस सुसूत्र मांडणीचा आयाम देण्यासाठी, ही पोस्ट, मी अलीकडेच शिक्षकांसाठीच्या एका समुपदेशन कार्यशाळेच्या प्रस्तावनेच्या निमित्ताने त्यांच्याशी साधलेल्या संवादासाठी खर्ची घातल्यास ते समर्पक तथा सयुक्तिक व प्रसंगोचित ठरावे…

Dr. Abhijit Sonawane sworn the Title of ‘Doctor for Beggars’ by choice and honored it by his deeds. I respect him with great regard not just for offering free-of-cost on-the-spot treatment to Beggars all over Pune city, or developing a personal bond with each and every one of them, or for having the enthusiasm to write about his humane experiences in most eloquent manner at wee hours after a hard day of slogging, no doubt all these things are incredible and deserve accolade; what I admire most about him is his intrinsic vision behind his kind acts of humanity – giving the beggars an identity, a real job and a purpose to lead a life of dignity! And his unwavering belief that ‘begging is a crime that is not punishable but curable and needs counseling not punishment’, is as profound as his cause and undertaking. He and his diligent team of few of his friends and well-wishers who support him every now and then at challenging times and situations [and thereby feature in his posts often] are doing their best to rehabilitate the beggars and refrain them from begging.

अन्वयार्थ…!

जगाच्या आर्थिक उत्क्रांतीची आणि पर्यायाने माणसाच्या उपभोग्यतेची परिसीमा मानली जाणारे खाजगीकरण, उदारीकरण आणि जागतिकीकरण या मनुष्य व्यवहाराच्या परस्परपूरक आधुनिक आयामाने माणसाचा ग्राहक झाला… खरतर ‘उपभोक्ता’ झाला असे म्हणणे जास्त सयुक्तिक ठरावे! समृद्ध मानवी मूल्यांची जागा क्षुद्र बाजारमूल्यांनी घेतली आणि माणसाच्या जन्मापासून मृत्युपर्यंत साऱ्याचाच बाजार झाला. नव्हे, जन्माआधीपासून म्हणजे अगदी डोहाळे लागण्यापासून तर मृत्युपश्चात अगदी पुनर्जन्मापर्यंत, साऱ्याच सामान्य नैसर्गिक घटनांचे आधी ‘डेव्हलपमेंट’ आणि यथावकाश ‘इव्हेंट’ झाले आणि इव्हेंट हे जेवढे साजरे करण्यासाठी असतात तेवढेच ‘मॅनेज’ करण्यासाठीही. आज ‘इव्हेंट मॅनेजमेंट’ हा मोठाच व्यवसाय आहे, किंबहुना हा एकच प्रचलित व्यवसाय आहे ज्याच्या अनेक उपशाखा आणि पाळेमुळे आहेत. तो कधी शिक्षणाच्या आवरणात येतो, कधी खेळांच्या मैदानावर धुरळा उडवतो, कधी वैद्यकातही डायग्नोस होतो तर कधी राजकारण म्हणून लोकशाही मार्गाने आपली धोरणे राबवितांना सापडतो.

While offering Capacity Building and CSR Consultancy to various elements of society that are in community development practices, I often come across the inadequate and insufficient understanding, or should I say misinterpretation, of CSR by and large. I have organized many workshops to impart the real meaning of CSR for its intent and content and anything that needs to be carried out under its head, however it seems to be a general practice to give a title of ‘CSR Project’ to any endeavor or undertaking to make it seem like one without actually having any intent or strategy, let alone the effort or impact, in place to give it at least a flavor of being a social project.

This underlined Robin Sharma’s recent quote, ‘Tranquility is New Luxury…’ Everybody seems to have plenty of everything except quality time, pure joy and peace of mind!

‘Master’…?

A monk called himself the ‘Master of Silence’. He was actually a fraud and had no genuine understanding. To sell his humbug Zen, he had two eloquent attendant monks to answer questions for him; but he himself never uttered a word, as if to show his inscrutable ‘silent Zen’.

Although it is not possible for every citizen of India who lack the prerequisite to build on such creative ideas, the innovative way with which ‘Solar Suresh’ has put to a good use what he has making his living Sustainable without any external support and lessening the load on the system by taking care of his own needs of energy and other resources like water, is not just extremely commendable but religiously follow-able.

Govardhana…!

Mount Govardhana is an 8 km long hill located about 21 KM from Vrindavan in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh of today’s India. A legend of Lord Krishna is associated with Govardhana according to the Bhagavata Purana – a revered text in Vaishnavism – a Hindu tradition that reveres Vishnu.

आज अगदी पहाटेपासून गुढी पाडव्याच्या मुहूर्तावर शुभेच्छा संदेशांचा पाऊस पडला. माणसाने केलेल्या अफाट आणि बेसुमार ‘प्रगती’स जमेस धरूनही माणसाचे ‘माये’शी असलेले नाते किती दृढ आहे हे ‘आभासी’ जगात राहून ‘प्रकटण्या’च्या त्याच्या अद्भुत कौशाल्यावरून सहज लक्षात यावे! सूज्ञास अधिक सांगणे न लगे तथापि इतरांसाठी हिंट – मायावी, आभासी जगात प्रकटणे – व्हर्च्यूअल रीऐलीटी अर्थात फेसबुक, व्हॉटसएपवर अंगठे दाखविणे. ‘जमाना बदल गया है मां जी…’ हे खरेच! आम्ही लहान असतांना अंगठा दाखविण्याचा अर्थ ‘ठेंगा’ म्हणजे आजच्या लोकप्रिय हजरजबाबी ‘सेन्स-ऑफ-ह्युमर’वाल्या भाषेत ‘बाबाजीका ठुल्लू…!’ असो.

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, Prime Minister of Britain for two full terms (1940 to 1945 and 1951 to 1955), the man behind the victory of England in the Second World War and a noted Writer-Politician had a peculiar political view of India, in general and India’s Independence, in particular, it is believed. There is a very (in)famous ‘prophecy’ attributed to him that is (cheap) popular for its malicious (and fabricated) content rather than its candid (and visionary) intent with expletives that are neither authentic part of his speech nor could be found in any of the official record of Speeches or Letters by him to anybody, let alone to Mahatma Gandhi!

Chief Election Commissioner of India Sunil Arora announced the Schedule of Lok Sabha Election 2019, according to which polling for electing 552 Members of Parliament as People’s Representative to constitute the 17^th Lok Sabha will commence on 11^th of April and results would be declared on 23^rd of May 2019. It’s exactly one month to go and a lot can happen in this decisive month that could be the longest one in the history of Independent India! With the Code-of-conduct in effect, political parties will take their respective courses to make most of it in their own shrewd ways that they have mastered throughout the years of independence. And what should WE do, except for checking out the dates of polling in our constituency and plan a holiday around those, that is? No, I am not going to sermon about the value of our vote and all that, because if we don’t make it our highest priority to choose what we and our future generations should get, or left with, to be precise, why I, or anyone else, should care? I am assuming that the largest democracy of the world has evolved enough to understand the value of a vote and making most of it; if it hasn’t, it doesn’t deserve to be a Democracy in first place. Period!

Reflect…!

Being responsive to any change is the characteristic sign of any living being. ‘Only Punch Bag’s don’t hit back…’ they say. Responding to anything that is thrown your way is very natural, why, it’s the sign of you being alive and kicking! Reacting is something different, though.

Psychology states that there are three types of responses to any Danger sensed by a living being – Fight, Flight or Freeze. These responses are the part of the built-in Defense Mechanism in any creature. But these are ‘Responses’ to a stimulus, like reflexes without conscious thought, remember.

All the national newspapers talking about recent inequality report [Read HERE] by Oxfam and also trying to spread awareness about ‘voting’ in elections of the largest democracy of the world, it becomes imperative to reflect on few facts and try to make some sense of those in the new light!

Child is the father of the Man in more than one sense… the best being its uncorrupted mind and unintentional creativity with which it can think of thousands of possibilities without prejudice or vested interests. I love to reiterate an incidence narrated by a School Teacher in this regard and whether it is a real incidence, based on a true story or a complete  work of fiction, I am not bothered as the message is prominent, powerful and forces one to reflect on the situation of our education systems that governs the child psychology or entire ‘developmental’ psychology for that matter!

Although ‘Quota’ systems that favored certain castes and communities were in place even in the pre-independence era of British India, ‘Reservation’ in India dates back to the period of Rajarshi Chatrapati Shahu – Maharaj of Princely State of Kolhapur in Maharashtra. Impressed by the initiatives of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and works of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, His Majesty himself being a generous and democratic ruler, Shahu Maharaj introduced first of its kind Reservation favoring non-Brahmin and backward classes in a pursuit of making a class-free India and abolish untouchability. His 1902 measures resulted into 50% Reservation for backward communities by providing them free education, opening hostels to facilitate their education and also developed societal structures to provide suitable employment to the educated class.

Disagreement is the essence of democracy but being dreadful is its descent. In any democracy, in general, it is imperative to have a Constitution, learn to honor it by wearing its principles on sleeve and in a nation as vast as India with a ‘rich and varied heritage’, it becomes vital to practice what we ‘pledge’. In the atmosphere that is polluted with debates and protest on the issues that have only political implications and the real issues at ground zero are being camouflaged, democracy suffocates.

For being the Architect of your life, YOU need to take charge of your LIFE and decide what to do with whatever it throws at you. Even if those are the stones, collect them, shape them and build a BRIDGE, not a wall!

यशवंतराव चव्हाण नाट्यगृह कोथरूड, पुणे येथे काल भारतीय विचार साधना आयोजित विचार भारती साहित्य संमेलनाच्या निमित्ताने ‘साहित्यातून संघर्षाकडे की सुसंवादाकडे?’ या विषयावर घडलेला परिसंवाद ही पर्वणीच ठरली असली तरी उद्घाटन सोहळ्यातील मान्यवरांचे विषय सूत्राविषयीचे भाष्य जेवढे उद्बोधक तेवढेच मार्मिक होते. त्यातीलही विशेष उल्लेखनीय म्हणजे ज्येष्ठ पत्रकार विचारवंत श्री. विजय कुवळेकर यांनी विविध उदाहरणे, किस्से आणि प्रसंग यांच्या माध्यमातून, आधी सुस्पष्ट विचार त्यानंतर संवादी, शुद्ध भाषा आणि त्यायोगे निर्माण होणारी, वर्धिष्णू राहणारी संस्कृती याचे उत्तमोत्तम दाखले देतांना, आजच्या विचार-विवेक-भाषा-संस्कृतीप्रति अक्षम्य, सर्वव्यापी अनास्थेबद्दल व्यक्त केलेली खंत जेवढी चिंतनीय तेवढीच गर्हणीय!

बदल आणि बदली…!

‘द ग्रेटेस्ट स्टोरी एव्हर टोल्ड’ असे सार्थ बिरूद मिरविणाऱ्या आणि हिंदी चित्रपट इतिहासातील एक सुवर्णाध्याय ठरलेल्या ‘शोले’ या चित्रपटात अनेक वैशिष्ट्यपूर्ण पात्रे आणि जोड्या होत्या – जय-विरू, ठाकूर-गब्बर, बसंती-धन्नो, सांबा-कालिया इत्यादी. यातच आणखी एका वैचित्र्यपूर्ण जोडीची भर घातली ती जेलर आणि हरिराम न्हाई यांच्या परस्परपूरक युतीने. आपल्या वैविध्यपूर्ण अभिनयाने अनेक भूमिका अजरामर करणाऱ्या असरानी या हरहुन्नरी कलाकाराने त्याच्या वाट्याला आलेल्या या अतिशय छोटेखानी भूमिकेत अक्षरश: जीव ओतला. या पात्राचा तकिया कलाम असलेले वाक्य, ‘हम अंग्रेजोंके जमानेके जेलर है, अरे अगर हम नही सुधर सके तो तुम क्या सुधरोगे…?’ हे चित्रपटात विनोदनिर्मितीसाठी वापरले असले आणि, सुरमा भोपालीच्या भूमिकेतील जगदीप आणि हरिरामच्या भूमिकेतील केस्टो मुखर्जी या अनुभवी, दिग्गज विनोदविरांशी तुलना होणे क्रमप्राप्तच असले, तरी असरानीने हा ‘अंग्रेजोंके जमानेका जेलर’ अविस्मरणीय करण्यात कुठलीही कसर ठेवली नाही.

A friend active in a Fort Restoration Group once shared an experience of how he appealed to the people visiting the fort on that day to support the cause of Fort Restoration generously, how they started to contribute instantaneously and voluntarily and how this contributing small amounts gathered momentum to collect a sizable sum as the day progressed from morning to evening. ‘Crowd-funding’ doesn’t get any simpler. If you are new to the concept of ‘Crowd-funding’ and want to know more about it, this small incidence can provide you enough knowledge to get going and let us fragment it into smaller pieces, just like my good old wise friend did on that particular day, at that particular place.

French President Emmanuel Macron made a remarkable speech addressing the International Audience comprising Heads of Nations, big and small, to mark the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I. In his conscientious discourse delivered in French, President of France put the new-age ‘Nationalism’ in a perspective vis-à-vis Patriotism, elucidating the fact that ‘A global order based on liberal values is worth defending against those who have sought to disrupt that system.’ The thought was Pure and the message was Clear – No War determines who is right — only who is left!

साहित्य हा समाजाचा आरसा असतो आणि साहित्यिक हे समाजमन आणि संस्कृतीचे शिल्पकार असतात या धारणेनुसार असे म्हणता येईल की साहित्यक्षेत्रात घडणाऱ्या घडामोडींचे प्रतिबिंब यथावकाश समाजात पडणे ही अपेक्षा स्वाभाविक असण्यास प्रत्यवाय नसावा. म्हणूनच साहित्यात जेव्हा काही आशादायक व उत्साहवर्धक घडते तेव्हा मरगळल्या समाजमनास नवउन्मेषाची पालवी फुटते आणि सृजनाचे बीज अंकुरते! अखिल भारतीय मराठी साहित्य संमेलनाच्या इतिहासात प्रथमच निवडणुकीशिवाय, एकमताने ९२ व्या संमेलनाच्या अध्यक्ष म्हणून साहित्यिकांची पसंती आणि रसिकांचे अनुमोदन मिळालेल्या अरुणाताई ढेरे यांचा महाराष्ट्र साहित्य परिषदेने आयोजित केलेल्या सत्कार समारंभास रसिकांचा उत्स्फूर्त प्रतिसाद मिळणे स्वाभाविकच होते. तुडुंब भरलेल्या माधवराव पटवर्धन सभागृहात समाधान, आनंद, उत्साह आणि चैतन्य ओसंडून वाहिले नसते तरच नवल!

#NotMe

No Human Being is entitled to choose when, where and how to take birth or exhale the last breathe; the starting and ending point of a life are decided by some other forces or elements. However what happens in between is called ‘Life’ which definitely is the series of choices one makes in the given circumstances.

Human is the only animal that, apart from being social, is gifted with an ability to think, analyze, rationalize, have opinions and voice them and all this for a greater purpose than just surviving… of transcending the basic instincts and making most of all gifted abilities to make this world a better place.

महोत्सव…!

दसरा आटोपला की तेजाच्या उत्सवाचे अर्थात दिपावळीचे वेध लागतात. दिवाळी म्हणजे वर्षभरातील सगळ्यात मोठा, उत्सवी आणि उर्जेने भरपूर असा सणोत्सव! या निमित्ताने घरदारच्या स्वच्छता, सजावटीपासून तर खरेदीची रेलचेल आणि खाण्यापिण्याची चंगळ असे उत्साही आणि उन्मेषी वातावरण आसमंतात भरून राहिलेले असते.

If a picture is worth thousand words, an actual photograph must be worth at least hundred protests…!

The Picture featured here has saved entire process of erecting a make-shift structure with a dais and pavilion that would have harmed heavily to the environment from digging holes in earth to put an air cooling system within the covered pavilion and all this just for an hour or two! Instead, the participants of this event enjoyed the cool shade of the Tree they took the shelter of and uncharged, unlimited supply of pure ‘Oxygen’ proved to be the ‘windfall’, literally…!

Today, on 87^th Birth Anniversary of India’s most beloved People’s President, Missile Man with the Wings of Fire Sir APJ Abdul Kalam and 4^th ‘Reading Inspiration Day – वाचन प्रेरणा दिवस’ as declared by Government of Maharashtra, with deep gratitude for it, I thought it would be prudent to share some Moral stories form Panchatantra with Frog being the protagonist. The reason to choose Frog as the protagonist of all three stories could be found in its peculiar character and ability of croaking incessantly!

Ideals…!

Today India remembers two of its greatest Sons ever – Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. First was the fulcrum of Independence Movement for a Free India by uniting the entire nation under one single objective of first Swa-rajya (Independence) and then Su-rajya (Good Governance) and the other was the most responsible and dutiful Prime Minister India ever had.

The CSR Act is in force since 1 Apr 2014 in India. First High Level Committee to review it was set up on 3 Feb 2015 under the Chairmanship of Anil Bajaj. This committee submitted its report on 22 Sept 2015 and one of its recommendations was to have a review after first 3 years of this legislation being in force.

Apart from many sensitization workshops MCA reportedly organized nationwide, National CSR Awards since year 2017 and National CSR Portal launched on 19 Jan 2018 are the outcomes of the recommendations of this review reports.

कुठल्यातरी हॉस्पिटलमध्ये पेशंट्सच्या व्हिजीटर्सकडून फी वसूल करून ती रूग्णांच्या बिलातून वजा करतात अशा आशयाचा एक व्हॉट्सअॅप मेसेज वाचला तेव्हा आमचे धुळ्याचे परममित्र व मार्गदर्शक धरमचंद चोरडीया यांनी पक्षकार्यकर्त्यांच्या बैठकीत सांगितलेला फार पूर्वचा एक किस्सा आठवला.

There is no count how many times I have used the analogy of UBUNTU – an African moral story that explains coexistence in such a simple and effective manner that is unmatched – in my Capacity Building Training sessions for any topic, in general and for Team Building, in particular. I am fascinated with the UBUNTU concept of ‘I am because we are…!’ and that’s the reason my e-paper Be[a]Cause has a tagline – ‘We have to Coexist and not compete!’

Today I want you to meet a phenomenon (calling Milind a person would be an understatement, I guess!) who is practically living UBUNTU day in and day out for about 2 decades now in the dense jungles of Jawhar. Milind Thatte, student of Political Science from Mumbai University who used to be a Journalist for Mumbai-based newspapers around the new millennium, a convenient job in the comforts of urban life that he relinquished for volunteering 3 years full-time in a non-formal education project for tribal children.

Teacher’s Day!

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s Birthday on 5^th of Sept is celebrated as Teacher’s Day as this Master believed that ‘The end-product of education should be a free creative man, who can battle against historical circumstances and adversities of nature’ and hence ‘Teachers should be the best minds in the country…!’

Apart from being First Vice President, Second President of Independent India, a Statesman and Philosopher, Dr. Radhakrishnan was awarded several high awards including a Knighthood in 1931, the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, in 1954, and honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.

क्षमता बांधणी

धर्मादाय सह आयुक्त तथा सार्वजनिक न्यास नोंदणी कार्यालय, पुणे यांच्या वतीने दि. २३ ऑक्टोबर २०१७ रोजी ‘न्यास नोंदणी रद्द करणेबाबतची चौकशीची जाहीर नोटीस’ प्रसारित करण्यात आली आणि या मोहिमेअंतर्गत सुमारे १००० संस्थांना चौकशीस सामोरे जाऊन कारवाईस तोंड द्यावे लागले हे आपण २ नोव्हेंबर २०१७ रोजी इथेच वाचले होते. आजच्या ताज्या बातमीनुसार याच मोहिमेच्या पुढच्या टप्प्यात तब्बल १ लाख २९ हजार ६५२ संस्थांना निष्क्रिय ठरविण्यात आले असून त्यांची नोंदणी रद्द करण्यात आली आहे. यातील पुणे विभागातील १३ हजार ८३० संस्था निष्क्रिय ठरल्या. या अतिशय गंभीर आणि महत्वाच्या विषयाबद्दल वेळोवेळी जाणीवजागृती करून आणि आपल्या संस्थेच्या व्यवस्थापनात व्यावसायिकतेचा अंतर्भाव करण्याबद्दल सतत आग्रह धरूनही असे का घडावे याचा थोडा मुळात जाऊन उहापोह केल्यास काय आढळते?

Simplified…!

In the changing scenario of technological developments, societal value systems, new-age concerns and their extensive implications, it has become imperative to rethink how we design the syllabus for any academic or training and based on what. Memorizing number tables and doing calculations on hand was made obsolete by invention of calculator and mobile phones easily replaced wrist watches by having digital time as a default function. Smart-Phones not only replaced entry-level Digital Cameras with a bonus (and lure) of ‘Selfie’, which you would find everywhere around you except in the dictionary!

God’s Own Country…?

Kerala is shattered today and people are devastated there. No matter who, how and what the aide or help is being offered in cash and kind, the people who lost their dear ones and their hard-earned belongings and properties could never be compensated. Although its a great sign of humanity that is apparent from the relentless efforts of rescue teams, help coming from all directions and our Anytime-Active-On-Mission Indian Army, we must not forget that all this could have been avoided with a little empathetic concern and holistic consideration from the policy-makers and their executives.

यक्ष प्रश्न

जो कल थे,
वे आज नहीं हैं।
जो आज हैं,
वे कल नहीं होंगे।
होने, न होने का क्रम,
इसी तरह चलता रहेगा,
हम हैं, हम रहेंगे,
यह भ्रम भी सदा पलता रहेगा।

सत्य क्या है?
होना या न होना?
या दोनों ही सत्य हैं?
जो है, उसका होना सत्य है,
जो नहीं है, उसका न होना सत्य है।
मुझे लगता है कि
ना-न-होना एक ही सत्य के
दो आयाम हैं,
शेष सब समझ का फेर,
बुद्धि के व्यायाम हैं।
किन्तु न होने के बाद क्या होता है,
यह प्रश्न अनुत्तरित है।

प्रत्येक नया नचिकेता,
इस प्रश्न की खोज में लगा है।

Policy…?

“Destroying any nation does not require the use of atomic bombs or the use of long-range missiles. It only requires lowering the quality of education and allowing cheating in the examinations by the students.

Patients die at the hands of such doctors.
Buildings collapse at the hands of such engineers.
Money is lost in the hands of such economists & accountants.
Humanity dies at the hands of such religious scholars.

SMART…?

The Management stream loves jargon and even among jargon’s Acronyms (short forms) tops the list. One of such acronym that was the buzzword a decade ago (and still pops out at certain occasions, particularly in the expression of an enthusiast trying to fit his/her head under the hat of a Management Consultant!) is SMART! You might find as many full forms of SMART as the thought leaders could make up, however the most popular till date is Specific, Measurable, Attainable (or Achievable), Relevant (or Realistic) and Time-bound (or Timely). And it is about Goal-setting, mind you! Because this Artificially Intelligent adjective is prefixed to ‘Objectives’ and it is preached to be the first step of successful management, ‘one should set clear and precise Objectives – the outcomes to be achieved through a process’ and these Objectives should be SMART; it has nothing to do with the SmartPhone or the Smart people, by the way, in fact it’s other way round!

गुरुपौर्णिमा

ब्रह्मा, विष्णू, महेश (उत्पत्ती, वृद्धी आणि लय) यांनी अत्री ऋषी आणि त्यांची पत्नी अनुसूया (ज्ञान/कर्म/भक्ती आणि तपस्या) यांची परिक्षा घेतली आणि त्या परीक्षेस उतरल्यामुळे अनुसूयेस वर दिला असता तिने या तिघांनी आपल्या पोटी जन्म घ्यावा हा वर मागितला आणि परिणामस्वरूप या तिघांचा समन्वय असलेला त्रिगुणात्मक दत्त जन्माला आला अशी कथा आहे. ज्याच्या जन्मापासूनच अशा दैवी अधिष्ठानांची योजना आहे आणि ज्याच्या नावातच गुरु, देव आणि दत्त तीनही तत्व आहेत असा हा अलौकिक योगी भीमा-अमरजेच्या संगमास गाणगापुरी औदुंबरछायेत वस्ती करून, काशीस स्नान करतो आणि कोल्हापुरास भिक्षा मागून माहूर गडावर निजावयास जातो अशी श्रद्धा बाळगणाऱ्या त्याच्या भक्तांचे क्लेश हरण करतो आणि षडरिपुंपासून त्यांची सुटका करून मुक्तीची वाट दाखविणारा सद्गुरू भेटवून देतो अशी धारणा आहे.

Moral…!

In my session on Corporate Governance, whenever the topic of Ethics vis-à-vis Morality needs to be discussed and reflected upon, I make it a point to share the following story with my audience, every single time without fail!

A man bought several boxes of cigars and had them insured against fire. When he had smoked them, he put in a claim against the insurance company that they had been destroyed by fire. The company refused to pay, and the man sued. The judge ruled that the company had given the man a policy protecting against fire, and must pay. As soon as the man accepted the money, the company had him arrested on a charge of Arson – a crime of intentionally and maliciously setting fire to buildings, wild-land areas, dumpsters, vehicles or other property with the intent to cause damage.

ACT…?

We are in the Fifth Year of CSR in India and with the philosophy of ‘Whole is greater than sum of its parts’, we should now commence our journey towards qualifying exam from Fifth Standard at Secondary School with the knowledge, skills and understandings that our Primary Education bestowed upon us. Why this review of our ‘Primary Education’ and an account of insights gained in due course is important has two reasons – First, till this very moment many wrong notions and misunderstandings prevail about the fundamental idea behind CSR and secondly the ‘Act’ needs to be understood, imbibed, implemented and undertook in letter and spirit, beyond the statistics and reports.

Initiative…!

From the recent rollback on the Plastic Ban, it is evident that ‘Enacting’ or ‘Banning’ anything has a little success, if not a complete failure! Do we really need to ban anything or do we need a fundamental change in our mindset as a society…?

This story of a small town in South India shows how People with right intentions and honest initiative can bring the transformation along-with finding a place in Guinness Book of Records… an achievement that deserves applauds and faithful following!

Carpenter…!

Once upon a time two brothers who lived on adjoining farms fell into conflict. It was the first serious rift in 40 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labor and goods as needed without a hitch.

Then the long collaboration fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.

One morning there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter’s toolbox. “I’m looking for a few days work,” he said, “Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there. Could I help you?”

Yoga…!

Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day.”
