Appeal…!

Jimmy Wales need your help to keep the Wikipedia democratic. And there is no big commitment expected, only a minute to shell out as low as ₹ 25 from your pocket. You must have got something worth at least this from Wikipedia, I guess! And even if you never refer to Wikipedia as you have other WTF* sources of information, it would be great gesture to support a democratic institution from being capitalized… the least you can do if you consider yourself to be a free, sensitive and sensible citizen of world’s largest democracy…!

If you miss or pass this, one more knowledge institute will become a profit center of some capitalist and will be put to broadcast His Masters Voice…!

Earth Day

Sustainable Development Goals are Global but to achieve those, we must act Local !

Our cosmic oasis, cosmic blue pearl
the most beautiful planet in the universe
all the continents and the oceans of the world
united we stand as flora and fauna
united we stand as species of one earth
black, brown, white, different colours
we are humans, the earth is our home.

Our cosmic oasis, cosmic blue pearl
the most beautiful planet in the universe
all the people and the nations of the world
all for one and one for all
united we unfurl the blue marble flag

Common…?

Vijay Prashard People’s Summit Speech

India is to host the G20 Summit for the first time in September 2023 and as a part of the leaders’ conference, around 200 meetings will be held across the country out of which, four will be held in Pune. The first meeting in Pune will be held on January 16 and 17 and Pune is getting all decked up with a facelift which is more like cosmetic changes to show-off for the guest’s stay in the city and things will return to ‘normal’ sooner than expected!

This reminded me of two things – the unforgettable (and unforgivable!) Commonwealth Games 2008 of which Pune was also a major venue and Vijay Prashard’s speech on decolonising the climate movement at COP26 Coalition’s People’s Summit for Climate Justice 2021 event at Glasgow. Both these things trigger two questions that are already there in the expression…

Who really holds the matchstick while the world burns…?

Are we all really together in this…?

The answer might irk some and discomfort a few… but the fact remains the same… those would be few…

Just a few…!

#OnlyLivablePlanet

Although Change is inevitable and it’s the only constant in this ever-evolving cosmos; ‘positive change’ needs to be brought, if not forced, it seems. Because changing the perspective about a convenient ideology, conditioned behavior and comfortable lifestyle is not only difficult but causes disturbance which can be compared to the irking turbulence on the plane in the cloudy weather, you know!

As this is the exclusively Human perspective of the situation, the resolution for the reform also has to be completely human and based on intellect and understanding of humans, isn’t it? For any challenge, problem or situation, in general and for Environmental, Social and Political, in particular, the chronology of solution has to be Awareness – Sensitization – Deliberation – Call-for-action and ACTION!

As far as Environmental challenges are concerned, it should suffice to say that we (the people) are existent because of the environment and it is not the other way round. More importantly, it is us, the human beings who have caused those challenges and therefore it is not just our duty but Responsibility – individual, collective or Corporate Social – to correct the wrongs that are causing all the harm to the environment.

As we grow up to become ‘educated’, ‘independent’ and ‘established’, we get so engrossed in the worldly objectives like career, property, possessions, provisions that we tend to forget our parents who are the very reason of our existence and take them for granted assuming that they would be always there if and when we need them. It takes some emergency to remind us of their well-being which otherwise is always presumed. Any negligence or procrastination in taking care of elder’s needs could prove fatal and in the unfortunate case of loss of life, all we are left with is repentance and nothing else!

Same is the case with the Environment – it has produced us and we are not the masters of it. If we don’t stop acting careless about it straightway, it would be too late even to repent about it. Each and every human is supposed to act about it with immediate effect and the very convenient defense, ‘who am I to do something about it and what can I do… alone?’ has following comeback…

Just like a post about 10 things that require zero talent (?) being viral nowadays, there are FOUR things that ANY individual can do ANYWHERE on this PLANET in any condition at ZERO cost…

  • Reduce – limit the consumption of anything to the adequate measures and avoid excess use of any resource.
  • Repair – Get rid of the ‘Use and throw’ mentality and try to mend the broken things including ideologies, value-systems and relations, may be!
  • Reuse – Almost anything can be reused and if it cannot, it must be destroyed in a proper way to avoid the landfill – the biggest danger to environment.
  • Recycle – Almost everything can be used to create something new just like the Buddha Story – read it here if you would like to.

The {GREEN} New Deal…?

Nominated for Emmy Award

If the entire concept of Sustainable Development and CSR – Corporate Social Responsibility could be narrowed down to 2 simple phrases that even a kid will understand, those would be – ‘CHANGE EVERYTHING’ and ‘LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND!’, I believe!

“Our short film ‘Message From the Future with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’ has been nominated for an Emmy award, in the category of Outstanding News Analysis: Editorial and Opinion. It’s an incredible honor for a film that started off with a simple question: what if we actually pulled off a Green New Deal? What would the future look like?” – Avi Lewis – Strategic Director @ The Leap informs me in a message. You can read his full message HERE and watch the film that has been already watched 12 Million times, to support the Cause!

And while you are at it, try to understand the Coronavirus Capitalism chronology

‘This crisis — like earlier ones — could well be the catalyst to shower aid on the wealthiest interests in society, including those most responsible for our current vulnerabilities, while offering next to nothing to the most workers, wiping out small family savings and shuttering small businesses. But as this video shows, many are already pushing back — and that story hasn’t been written yet…!’

Chief Election Commissioner of India Sunil Arora announced the Schedule of Lok Sabha Election 2019, according to which polling for electing 552 Members of Parliament as People’s Representative to constitute the 17th Lok Sabha will commence on 11th of April and results would be declared on 23rd of May 2019. It’s exactly one month to go and a lot can happen in this decisive month that could be the longest one in the history of Independent India! With the Code-of-conduct in effect, political parties will take their respective courses to make most of it in their own shrewd ways that they have mastered throughout the years of independence. And what should WE do, except for checking out the dates of polling in our constituency and plan a holiday around those, that is? No, I am not going to sermon about the value of our vote and all that, because if we don’t make it our highest priority to choose what we and our future generations should get, or left with, to be precise, why I, or anyone else, should care? I am assuming that the largest democracy of the world has evolved enough to understand the value of a vote and making most of it; if it hasn’t, it doesn’t deserve to be a Democracy in first place. Reflect…!

Being responsive to any change is the characteristic sign of any living being. ‘Only Punch Bag’s don’t hit back…’ they say. Responding to anything that is thrown your way is very natural, why, it’s the sign of you being alive and kicking! Reacting is something different, though.

Psychology states that there are three types of responses to any Danger sensed by a living being – Fight, Flight or Freeze. These responses are the part of the built-in Defense Mechanism in any creature. But these are ‘Responses’ to a stimulus, like reflexes without conscious thought, remember.

SMART…?

The Management stream loves jargon and even among jargon’s Acronyms (short forms) tops the list. One of such acronym that was the buzzword a decade ago (and still pops out at certain occasions, particularly in the expression of an enthusiast trying to fit his/her head under the hat of a Management Consultant!) is SMART! You might find as many full forms of SMART as the thought leaders could make up, however the most popular till date is Specific, Measurable, Attainable (or Achievable), Relevant (or Realistic) and Time-bound (or Timely). And it is about Goal-setting, mind you! Because this Artificially Intelligent adjective is prefixed to ‘Objectives’ and it is preached to be the first step of successful management, ‘one should set clear and precise Objectives – the outcomes to be achieved through a process’ and these Objectives should be SMART; it has nothing to do with the SmartPhone or the Smart people, by the way, in fact it’s other way round! Moral…!

In my session on Corporate Governance, whenever the topic of Ethics vis-à-vis Morality needs to be discussed and reflected upon, I make it a point to share the following story with my audience, every single time without fail!

A man bought several boxes of cigars and had them insured against fire. When he had smoked them, he put in a claim against the insurance company that they had been destroyed by fire. The company refused to pay, and the man sued. The judge ruled that the company had given the man a policy protecting against fire, and must pay. As soon as the man accepted the money, the company had him arrested on a charge of Arson – a crime of intentionally and maliciously setting fire to buildings, wild-land areas, dumpsters, vehicles or other property with the intent to cause damage.

Still it took 100 years for the most intelligent and evolved species of the planet to realize that the brain was important too! It is not about intelligence but about the realization, about cognizance and perception, I believe. In the early years of cricketing, bowlers might have been sober and in absence of bouncers and bodyline balling, the most vulnerable part could have been the centre-one rather than the top-one. It might have taken the first ball that bounced so high to hit the batsman in the head to realize the need to protect the head as well, who knows? Continue reading “Reform…!”

Hypothesis…!

In 1992, about 26 years ago, Severn Cullis-Suzuki, a Canadian girl who spoke to the United Nations at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and left them completely silent and speechless for five minutes when she was twelve years old. She had raised all the money to travel to the delegation, five thousand miles from her home, herself. Continue reading “Hypothesis…!”

CCI…!

Very aptly named ‘Reward Work, Not Wealth’ report published on 22 January 2018 by Oxfam – an international confederation of charitable organizations focused on alleviation of global poverty believing that the injustice of poverty demands a powerful and practical response to address both its causes and its impact on peoples’ lives – revealed the statistics that – Globally, 82 percent (73% in India) of the wealth generated last year went to the richest one percent of the population, while 3.7 billion people that account for the poorest half of the world saw no increase in their wealth while 67 crore Indians who comprise the poorest half of the population saw a meagre one percent increase in their wealth. Hummingbird…!

Today is the First Day of a fresh week, a brand-new year and rest of your life! There is no need of any resolution, leave it for the Minutes of Meetings; just a deep reflection on the status quo would suffice for your determination of the day, if not week, month, year or lifetime. Just look inside and around, try and feel everything that stimulates your senses. Count the positive vibes vis-a-vis negative ones. If the later are more, there is something wrong, seriously wrong… Either with you or with the ecosystem you are part of. In any case it’s only you who can change this for better. 26th Day of November

“If the Indian constitution is our heritage bequeathed to us by our founding fathers, no less are we, the people of India, the trustees and custodians of the values which pulsate within its provisions! A constitution is not a parchment of paper; it is a way of life and has to be lived up to. Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty and in the final analysis; its only keepers are the people. Imbecility of men, history teaches us, always invites the impudence of power…!”

With these words in the conclusion of his book Making of India’s Constitution, Justice Khanna – a righteous visionary – warns us and wants to make us alert about our responsibility. If we – the Indians – read, learn and reflect on this, which rather is a Statutory Warning than a message, we certainly would take a step towards living up to the Constitution that we have adopted, enacted and given to ourselves on 26th Day of November 1949. And while respecting the fact that the Architects of our Constitution had been liberal to allow the revision of it realizing the need for its responsiveness to the sociopolitical conditions from time to time, any such amendment was not meant to damage the essence of it in any way or by anyone!
